Book Says Grateful Dead Has Grand Place in History
Move over, Duke Ellington. Turn around, Miles Davis. Make room at the pinnacle of 20th century American music for the Grateful Dead. So says Dennis McNally, an historian who just published a 620-page biography, "A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead," now on The New York Times Bestseller list. McNally dismisses critics who say the Grateful Dead played folksy psychedelia that was little more than a soundtrack for the LSD trips of their obsessive fans -- the Deadheads.

Napster's Future Could Be Determined Today
Napster CFO Carolyn Jensen, appearing Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, warned that failure by the court to approve the file-sharing service's sale to German media company Bertelsmann A.G. by today (Sept. 3) would force it to cease operations immediately, Billboard Bulletin reports. Bertelsmann, whose offer of $100 million for the Redwood City, Calif.-based service's assets includes more than $90 million in loans, has said that it will rescind the offer after today.

According to an open letter to Thompson from Xiph.org CEO Emmett Plant, an exemption from regular licensing fees for GPL'd software has just been withdrawn.

Some say Ogg Vorbis is better and cheaper than MP3
It's a measure of our national geekification that the term MP3 has entered our common speech. Millions of us collect legal or illegal music files, encoded in the MP3 digital format and then burned onto compact discs or distributed over the Internet. But MP3 isn't the last word in digital music, far from it. It's actually a fairly old technology, and more expensive than most people realize. That's why we soon may add a new and even geekier term to our technical vocabulary: Ogg Vorbis.

'Vibes' master Lionel Hampton dead
Jazz musician dies at 94
The American musician, Lionel Hampton, who made history by becoming the first jazz vibraphonist, has died in New York, aged 94.
Hampton's rise to fame began in 1936, when he played with his own band at the Los Angeles Paradise Cafe and was discovered by Benny Goodman when he came into the club.
Six weeks later, Hampton officially joined the Benny Goodman Quartet and started actively recording music.
Hampton stayed with Goodman until 1940, sometimes substituting on drums and taking vocals.
In 1940, he formed his first big band and in 1942 had a huge hit with the tune "Flying Home".
