"Talking" California gorilla puts out a CD
Koko, California's famous "talking" gorilla, is breaking into song. The 31-year-old lowland gorilla, who is said to have mastered some 1,000 terms in American sign language, has "written" lyrics for a new album which should be available by the end of the week, her keepers said on Tuesday.
"The songs show a real depth of emotion. She's a complex person, just like we are," said Jennifer Patterson, a spokeswoman for the California-based Gorilla Foundation near San Francisco that has been Koko's home for some three decades.

Centsless
Was Jam Master Jay killed because of his ties to 50 Cent? Police speculate that the young rapper's ridicule of gangsta rap may have inspired the murder of his mentor, the Run-DMC DJ. The rising rapper, who is poised for fame with an appearance on the soundtrack album to Eminem's upcoming movie ''8 Mile,'' is known for his parodies of other rappers' songs. This summer, he had a hit called ''Wanksta'' that ridicules gangsta rappers who can't come up with enough cash to buy the fancy cars they boast about because of their frequent stints behind bars. ''One of the theories is that somebody was trying to get back at 50 Cent by taking out Mizell,'' a police spokesperson told the New York Times.

Dead Kennedys No Longer `Banned From San Francisco'
Punk band The Dead Kennedys made press recently when it was "banned" from playing in its hometown of San Francisco, but a kind-hearted venue has come to the rescue. Guitarist "East Bay Ray" says friends of the band's former singer, Jello Biafra, upset that the band is touring without him, banned the group from playing two of the city's largest venues, and then spread word to other venues, and pretty soon the band was blacklisted.

Tom Petty Is Pissed
And he's got plenty of good reasons The man who told the world "I Won't Back Down," "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Don't Come Around Here No More" doesn't need any assertiveness-training course. Tom Petty's determined, sometimes defiant attitude has collided with the music business throughout the years. For instance, in 1982 Petty recorded Hard Promises with the Heartbreakers, only to find that his then-record company had plans to use his name to initiate a new, higher $9.98 list price for albums. Petty withheld the tapes and threatened to retitle his record $8.98 in protest.
