Think first, play later
Joe Satriani talks about the process of making music. Joe Satriani: "I think I do everything for kicks. I try to come up with different directions when I'm writing a record on purpose, to stimulate me, to wrench me from one comfortable direction and into something else."

Fans of Run-DMC can now pay tribute to Jam Master Jay with their feet. On Tuesday (January 21), which would have been the slain turntable legend's 38th birthday, Adidas, in conjunction with JMJ's wife and three sons, released a special company's classic Superstar sneaker, this one called the Jason Mizell Ultrastar. The Ultrastars, which Jam Master Jay's three sons helped to design, feature both JMJ's name and picture on them.

Humming helps name that tune
For better or worse, technological advances have transformed the music industry, but technology may now help even the tone-deaf to name that tune. Software developed by Germany's Fraunhofer Institut, the creators of the MP3 digital audio format that is now ubiquitous across the Internet, have a solution.
It's called "Query by Humming" -- software displayed at this week's Midem music conference in Cannes that identifies a song by title and composer based on a person humming a few bars into a microphone.

Daphne Oram, the unsung pioneer of techno
Almost un-noticed by the wider world, one of the pioneers of electronic music has died. Without Daphne Oram, we may never had known what the Tardis sounded like.
Electronic music - as much a part of today's life as whistling a tune to yourself - grew up amid milk bottles, gravel, keys, and yards of magnetic tape and wires.

Doubts on Diva's Airplay Numbers
Mariah Carey's new single, "Through the Rain," has stirred up a squall in the radio world with suggestions that the pop singer's record label tried to revive her career by inflating airplay figures.
Island Def Jam Music Group bought radio spots containing 53 seconds of the song, which fooled the computers that monitor and measure airplay, or "spins," for the recording industry. As a result, the ballad seemed to be building momentum in markets across the country when in fact it was losing steam.
