Die Entertainment-Branche ist im Umbruch: Das MP3-Format macht aus CDs kleine, Internet-taugliche Datenhäppchen, die inzwischen millionenfach im Netz getauscht werden. Die großen Musikkonzerne suchen seit Jahren nach einer Antwort auf die digitale Herausforderung. Jetzt lässt eine kleines, unabhängiges Klassiklabel aufhorchen. Naxos verkauft alle Alben, die es jemals herausgebracht hat, auf einmal: 6.000 Stunden Musik in einer Box, die kaum größer ist als eine CD. Damit will Naxos die Klassikwelt revolutionieren.

Die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 gaben den Ausschlag: Nach acht Jahren Pause veröffentlicht Living Colour, die einzige Rockkapelle ohne weiße Mitglieder, ein lautstarkes neues Album über Amerika im Schockzustand. Gitarrist und Bandleader Vernon Reid rebelliert indes gegen den eigenen Kultstatus.

Würfelorchester
So ziemlich alles an der zeitgenössischen Art, Musik zu produzieren und zu konsumieren, ist falsch. Komponisten, Interpreten und Konsumenten von Musik sind auf vielfache Weise von einander getrennt, die Interaktionsmöglichkeiten zwischen diesen drei Gruppen minimal, zumal, wenn die Kommunikation medial vermittelt ist. Jedenfalls ist das die Wahrnehmung von einigen musikalisch interessierten Ingenieuren im Interaction Laboratory von Sony.

We live in a karaoke culture. The Japanese word means "empty orchestra" - a lifeless musical form unencumbered by creativity and free of responsibility. Simple, clean fun for the millennial nuclear family. You can't fail in a karaoke world. It's life by proxy, liberated by hindsight.

Singing Science Records
When I was a kid my parents got this six-LP set of science-themed folk songs for my sister and me. They were produced in the late 1950s / early 1960s by Hy Zaret and Lou Singer. The Singing Science lyrics were very Atomic Age, while the tunes were generally riffs on popular or genre music of the time.

Rock Star Prince Spreads Religion Door-To-Door
Former rock star Prince has reportedly been going door-to-door sharing his Jehovah's Witnesses faith. She told the newspaper that the pair stayed for about 25 minutes, "reading Scriptures about being Jewish and the land of Israel," gave them a pamphlet and left. In her words, "It was so bizarre, you would have just laughed."

A German man has been arrested after smashing up two police cars with a stolen tractor in a low-speed car chase.
The incident occurred in the western town of Montabaur late on Sunday, after the 37-year-old man had an argument with his girlfriend.

The American Billboard singles chart top 10 is made up exclusively of tunes from black artists for the first time.
Nine of the ten are rappers, plus one track by R&B singer Beyonce and reggae star Sean Paul.

Bono zofft sich mit dem US-Präsidenten
Der irische Rockstar Bono und George W. Bush liegen sich in den Haaren. Es geht um viel Geld.
Gestern trafen sich der U2-Frontsänger und der amerikanische Präsident zu einem Gespräch. Die beiden unterhielten sich nicht über Musik, sondern über Aids. Nach der Unterredung war Bono ziemlich «geladen»: «Bush liegen diese Probleme am Herzen, und ich glaube ihm», sagte der Musiker. «Mit den Zahlen bin ich jedoch nicht einverstanden.»
