Little porkers get big with help from Mozart
A Vietnamese pig farmer says he has found a novel way to boost productivity, by exposing his 3 000 hogs to the melodies of Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert while they have their snouts in the trough.

The body of soul singer James Brown has yet to be buried as attorneys and his children work to settle issues surrounding his estate, including where he will be laid to rest.
For now, his body lies in a sealed casket in his home on Beech Island, said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Ga., which handled the services.
Brown died of heart failure Dec. 25 at age 73. His will has yet to be filed, said Buddy Dallas, an attorney for the singer.

The Worst Band Names of '06: The Final List
Regular blog readers may remember my mid-year tally of the worst band names we’d encountered, a glimpse of the year-end’s definitive list of bad puns, clumsy imagery, and misappropriation of the word “funk.” There are so many bands out there, and so many of them have bad names—and not just run-of-the-mill mediocrity like Real Lunch. I mean truly awful, what-were-they-thinking kinda names. Poofinger, anyone?

Download Only Song to Crack the Top 40
The BBC is reporting that next week's UK music chart may have the first sign of the end of the recording industry as we know it. From this week (7th Jan, 2006), all downloaded music sales are counted in the official UK chart, not just tracks which have had a physical media release. Now, an unsigned band called Koopa is poised to enter the top 40 without any old-world recording, distribution, or production deals.

Happy 60th Birthday, Mr. Bowie
Good lord, yes, today, Monday, is the day David Jones, aka The Thin White Duke, aka Ziggy Stardust, turns 60 years old. David Bowie at 60, who would've imagined it? For years now, Bowie has perched high at the top of my favorite musical artists list.
Happy birthday, Ziggy!

Ziggy Stardust at 60
David Bowie as Nikola Tesla is a crafty piece of casting. He barely appears in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, but his elusive character sheds a vast, unifying, enigmatic glow across the film's tortuous narrative.
Nearing 60 and playing himself, he looks very much the aged oracle in Wim Wenders' short film, The World's Greatest Record Stores. His once peerless cheekbones are dimpled anchor points for sagging jowls. His hair is a mousy brown coif where crazy styles and colours have come and gone. A black skivvy abdicates his longstanding fashion-icon credentials.

Musipedia song searching: search via humming
Musipedia song searching: search via humming, tapping, musical contours, or (an awkward) keyboard function. Had the most success with tapping--too bashful to use the humming search in public.

P-Funk. Uncut Funk. The Bomb.
The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership First, there comes the Brides, followed by stretchin' out with Casper the Holy Ghost and some Horny Horns. Next, with people standing on the verge, the Wizard of Woo opens the Maggot Brain. A devil-dance later, all are witnesses to The Landing. The recovery of funky stuff commences, and the mother is summarily turned out, with subsequent damage to the roof.

Lost tape could be Hendrix version of Welsh anthem
He famously played his own screeching version of the Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock but it has emerged that Jimi Hendrix may also have had a bash at another national anthem: the Welsh one.
The version of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, Land of My Fathers, was discovered on the end of a dusty eight-track tape which had languished for years in a forgotten tea chest in a north London recording studio.
