Inspired Hip-Hop Album Covers:
It doesn’t matter how many Casio beats Southern hip-hop throws at us, rap music is, and will always be about sampling. And since sampling is the rap way-of-life, it’s only natural to extend it from another artist’s album to another artist’s album art. Some designers sample album art from the same pool of musicians that producers sample from; others even pay cover-art homage to other rappers. Consider it the album-art version of Premo scratching someone else’s lyrics for a Gangstarr chorus.

Brötzmann Rarities (MP3)
My first encounter with free jazz giant Peter Brötzmann happened more than 20 years ago, at the 1985 Total Music Meeting in Berlin. At the time I was a rather naive teenager visiting (West) Berlin, and I saw that Wolfgang Dauner was playing at the Quartier Latin. I didn't know what to make of the name "Total Music Meeting" and had never heard of any of the other musicians who were playing that night, but I really liked Dauner, so I decided to go and let myself be surprised. And surprised I was. I had never really listened to free jazz before, so it was quite an experience to see Phil Minton, Peter Brötzmann, and Hugh Davies going berserk on stage, with lots of energy and no discernible rules or structure. At least that was the impression it made on me at the time.

Controversy raised over Prince performance
Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the "Purple Rain" segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

2,000 musicians take up N.H. group's challenge to record album in a month
Guitarist Mike Samborn used to sketch out a song, play it, decide he didn't like it and toss it in the trash.
But this month, he doesn't have that option. Samborn is one of 2,000 musicians worldwide facing a March 1 deadline to write and record an entire album as part of the second RPM Challenge. There are no prizes or winners, but the participants' works will be uploaded to an online jukebox.
