Fans urged to boycott Winehouse

Amy Winehouse's father-in-law has urged the singer's fans to boycott her music until she seeks treatment for what he called a drug addiction.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Giles Fielder-Civil said he was concerned that Winehouse and her husband, Blake, would die without medical help.

He said: "Perhaps it is time to stop buying records. It's a possibility, to send that message."

Flower power

Flowers In The Rain started as an accidental hippy anthem and ended as an accidental charity fundraiser after a fraught libel case in the High Court.

As all pop fact fans know, The Move's Flowers In The Rain was the first track to be played on Radio One, chosen to symbolise the era of flower power and guaranteeing an ongoing stream of income for the band.

Soundtrack of a generation plays out final farewell to Mr Manchester

The funeral was organised by the Manchester-based Co-op: what else would you expect for a Manchester man? And there was certain sense of style including a jet black coffin with silver handles and a hearse with, possibly serendipitously, the initials AW in its number plate.

And because this Anthony H Wilson had been one of the most influential music industry figures of our time, there was a suitably eclectic soundtrack: Atmosphere by Joy Division and New Order's first single, Ceremony; Bob's Yer Uncle by the Happy Mondays; He Who Would Valiant Be by John Bunyan; and Hail Queen of Heaven, a traditional hymn Wilson would have sung often in his Catholic boyhood.

After Putting Mixtape Creators In Jail, Universal Realizes It Needs Mixtapes

Remember back in January, when a SWAT team, at the direction of RIAA officials, raided the studio of a well known DJ and mixtape artist in Atlanta? This seemed like quite the overreaction to a system that had been known for its successful promotion of many RIAA-backed artists. However, after the DJs were arrested, the entire market was on notice and many mixtapes stopped showing up in the marketplace.

Unlocking Pandora's box

I'm in love with Pandora. My wife is happy about this - she could love Pandora, too. But now, me and Pandora have got stuck in a bad patch. She can no longer sing in my little shell-pink ears. We have been torn apart by two powerful organisations - the US Copyright Royalty Board and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) - who have made it too expensive to maintain a worldwide internet radio service.

Hasch mich, Mädchen (MP3)

I have written about music from the former GDR before, but somehow I missed out on the most profoundly retarded punk anthem ever recorded in the German language. Released in 1983 by the band Keks (Cookie), it shows once again what socialist societies were capable of.

Tapedeck.org

is a project of neckcns.com, built to showcase the amazing beauty and (sometimes) weirdness found in the designs of the common audio tape cassette. There's an amazing range of designs, starting from the early 60's functional cassette designs, moving through the colourful playfulness of the 70's audio tapes to amazing shape variations during the 80's and 90's. We hope you enjoy these tapes as much as we do!

Blue Note label to offer downloads'n'social on web

Jazz and blues record label Blue Note plans to revamp its website from later this month, transforming it from a regular corporate front window to a combined social network and music download shop.

The move could be seen as flying in the face of conventional marketing wisdom. Jazz fanciers are assumed to spend their music-buying time grubbing for vinyl in backstreet shops, getting dust all over their berets and corduroy jackets with elbow patches.
