Brasilian Girls - LIVE 14. September @ fluc

Brasilian Girls

Brazilian Girls are a quartet from New York City known for their eclectic blend of electronic dance music with everything from tango and chansons to house and lounge styles. The band has described their sound as "melting pop." None of the members are actually from Brazil and the only female member is lead singer Sabina Sciubba. Didi Gutman plays keyboards for the band, Aaron Johnston plays the drums and Jesse Murphy plays the bass.

The 20 Greatest Bootlegs Of All-Time

The term ‘bootlegging’ orignally referred to moonshine whiskey that was made and sold during prohibition, but the act of copying the artistic works of others goes back to Shakespearean times. In fact, if it weren’t for actors smuggling scripts, and audience members transcribing lines (the renaissance equivalent of wearing a mic into a concert) many of Shakespeare’s plays wouldn’t have survived to modern times.

In 1966 some enterprising souls marketed a set of alternate recordings by Bob Dylan under the title Great White Wonder. These records marked the first rock bootlegs (live opera, classical, jazz and folk had been recorded for years) and started a sensation that persists to this day.

Manu Chao thinks locally but inspires globally

THERE'S a word that comes up more than any other in a conversation with Manu Chao, and it's not one you'd imagine is foremost on the mind of a global music superstar: neighborhood.

Neighborhoods are Chao's nerve center, the source of information and the center of power. It's where reggae kids mixed it up with punk kids in the squats of suburban Paris. It's where he plays, to this day, in little Barcelona taverns, because when it comes to road-testing new songs, you can't lie to a bartender. And the neighborhood, according to the left-leaning, politically outspoken musician, is where the revolution begins:

"We want a better world, and the solution is thousands and thousands and thousands of homemade revolutions. Everybody can change his mind and his neighborhood."

The Many Versions of Boléro [Video]

Boléro is a one-movement orchestral piece by French composer Maurice Ravel. Originally composed as a ballet, the piece, which premiered in 1928, is arguably Ravel’s most famous musical composition. It was also one of his last works before illness forced him into retirement.

Manu Chao repeats himself well on 'La Radiolina'

Simply said, singer-songwriter Manu Chao is an enigma. He is considered one of the founders of Latin alternative music, but he sings in French, Spanish, Arabic, Galician, Portuguese, English and the Senegalian language Wolof. He is thought of as a standard bearer of the anti-globalization movement, but he shies away from leadership, living his life more as a nomadic anarchist.

Chao's new album, "La Radiolina" (Nacional), will more than please his fans, although his penchant for repetition and recycling remains unabated. The title, invoking a pirate radio station for the world's politically voiceless, is not unlike his previous coining of Radio Bemba, slang for the "word on the street." Still the 21-track album is perhaps his most creative work yet, sharpening his political focus while allowing him to explore new sonic styles.

KLF: Burn a Million Quid (video) and The Manual (e-book)

BB pal Michael W. Dean recently reminded us of the work of K Foundation, the UK anarcho-prankster duo who set about to become ginormous pop stars in the 1980s, and did just that as The KLF.

In 1988, members Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty self-published a book ("The Manual") with step-by-step instructions on how anyone might do exactly the same: PDF Link to a copy of "The Manual."

Keith Richards fumes at poor reviews

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has demanded an apology from Swedish newspapers for their scathing reviews of the group's performance in the country earlier this month.

Tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet gave thumbs down to the Aug. 3 concert at Ullevi stadium in Goteborg, with Expressen suggesting Richards was "superdrunk" on stage.

"This is a first!" the 63-year-old rock star wrote in a letter published by Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter. "Never before have I risen to the bait of a bad review.

"But this time ... I have to stand up ... for our fans all over Sweden ... to say that you owe them, and us, an apology."
