Glowing Amy Winehouse takes to the stage at Mandela's birthday concert in London
A glowing Amy Winehouse bounced back from her recent health problems to sing at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park last night.
The 24-year-old singer belted out renditions of her hit songs Valerie and Rehab in front of the 46,664-strong crowd, before returning to the stage at the climax of the gig for a rendition of The Special AKA's hit Free Nelson Mandela with Jerry Dammers and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Prince Sues Musicians For Making A Tribute Album For His Birthday
It's been really disappointing watching how Prince has squandered what had been seen as a enlightened view of how music works in this day and age. Instead of continuing to embrace that, and use it to his advantage, Prince has become fantastically anti-fan, and day-by-day seems to be destroying his reputation. It started with threatening fan sites, quickly followed up by lawsuits against YouTube, eBay and the Pirate Bay, and more recently has involved a bizarre and ill-advised strategy of taking down YouTube videos that he probably had no right to take down.

'Oldest' computer music unveiled
A scratchy recording of Baa Baa Black Sheep and a truncated version of In the Mood are thought to be the oldest known recordings of computer generated music.
The songs were captured by the BBC in the Autumn of 1951 during a visit to the University of Manchester.
The recording has been unveiled as part of the 60th Anniversary of "Baby", the forerunner of all modern computers.
The tunes were played on a Ferranti Mark 1 computer, a commercial version of the Baby Machine.

Codgepiece
Once upon a time, The Old Codger made such a menace of himself around here that he actually tricked us into turning him into some sort of WFMU mascot for a little while. We snapped out of his damn spell, but not before he'd hijacked half the record library and insinuated himself into as many album covers as he could find a place for himself, just to spite the medium! My apologies for the really ugly ones, but what do you expect from a guy who's idea of arresting visuals is a snazzy wall-calendar?

BBC Sound Index
The Sound Index is not meant to be a definitive chart (like a sales chart). Rather, it's a gauge of who and what is currently driving conversation and interaction about music online. It's a great tool for music discovery, and to find out who's currently hot in the music world of teenagers. However, we have taken steps to ensure that our data collection is as accurate as possible, and have implemented an algorithm to help us create the most editorially relevant and robust Index.

Moog Unveils Badass Guitar with Infinite Sustain
Bob Moog's synthesizers and effects changed the world. Now, the company that bears his name is trying to apply its vision to a new instrument: the guitar.
The Moog Guitar Paul Vo Edition has infinite sustain -- enough to keep Nigel Tufnel holding the guitar up to his ear until the end of time -- while a muted mode allows players to add the sound of their fingers holding down the strings loosely and then taking them away from the strings right away after the strum for a banjo-type sound. These effects operate separately on each pickup, giving players a wider range of sonic options.
