Projection Keyboards Overview

These are virtual keyboards that can be projected and touched on any surface. The keyboard watches your fingers move and translates that action into keystrokes in the device. Most systems can also function as a virtual mouse.

Mobiles get a sense of touch

Within a year you could be able to "touch" someone over your mobile phone. A US company called Immersion has adapted the sensory technology used in gamepads and joysticks to send physical sensations via a mobile. "We're thinking in terms of virtual touch," Immersion's Jeffrey Eid told BBC News Online. "Today you can't really physically touch someone across the phone. With this technology you can."

Pocket PC Phone Edition

The big goodie I got to take home from Möbius this year was a Pocket PC Phone Edition. While some attendees got unbranded XDAs straight from HTC in Taiwan, mine was a T-Mobile-branded device. Not that it matters; the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, the AT&T Siemens SX56 and the O2 XDA are all essentially the same. Only minor differences in software set them apart. As my device was flashed by Microsoft with the latest build of the Phone Edition operating system - rather than T-Mobile's version - this review will cover these devices in general. Let's get started.

Don't Touch that Dial

Mobile phones packing Java virtual machines are gaining in popularity, and are headed for American shores. Will they be the next arena for malicious hacking? Java phones are coming to the U.S., bringing with them a second chance for mobile applications, and, experts caution, a new platform for malicious code.

"It's going to be an issue," says Tony Davis, acting CEO of Tira Wireless, a Toronto startup that certifies and publishes J2ME (Java 2 MicroEdition) applications. Davis already uses a Trojan horse program when he makes sales calls. "When I meet with European carriers, I pull up a phone and show them a car racing game that's actually not just that, it's sending a huge amount of traffic back and forth," Davis says. "I tell them, your customer is going to get a bill for 500 pounds at the end of the month, and who are they going to come after? You."
