Show Us Your Geeky Jack-o'-Lanterns

It's the weekend before Halloween, and geeks all across the land are sharpening their knives and getting ready to gouge orange gourds. Pumpkin masterpieces range from Battlestar Galactica cool (a Cylon Jack-O-Lantern, complete with the bouncing red "eye") to delicately nuanced Mac O'Lanterns of geek titans Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer.

DIY laser long-distance listening device

No DIY espionage kit is complete without a long-distance listening device, and no DIY long-distance listening device is complete unless it uses a sweet laser in some form or fashion. If you agree with that statement, then you're in luck, because the following project will show how you can use a laser pointer to hear noises from hundreds of feet away (the distance will be relative to the strength of the laser).

Jake von Slatt's Steampunk Creations

Steampunk DIY hacker Jake von Slatt poses with his Clockwork Steampunk Stratocaster. Inkjet Printed Film Process

Video frames printed onto transparency film and cut down to Super 8 or 16mm film dimensions

Introduction

In the fall of 2005, I had an idea to make a small film projector out of a VHS cassette, as a mash-up of video and film sensibilites. I thought 16mm film could be used, or if this was unavailable, content would be printed on a strip of plastic. This project was not pursued due to a lack of enthusiasm.

However, during the summer of 2006, I was driving to work and it hit me: Print out Super 8 film itself and use a standard movie projector for playback.
