Airspace meets cyberspace
Soon you could be getting faster net access on the plane to your holiday destination than you can at home. Aircraft maker Boeing is staging trials of technology that will give passengers high-speed net access during their flight. The service will let passengers on long-haul flights browse the web with their own handhelds and laptops or let business travellers stay in touch with the office.

Berlin suicide mistaken for art
Berlin passers-by were slow to respond to a woman who had committed suicide, thinking that she was taking part in a piece of performance art. The 24-year-old woman died jumping from a window at the Tacheles art gallery in the fashionable Mitte district.

"The Matrix and Philosophy"
Apparently, when the Wachowski brothers' film "The Matrix" was released in 1999, it set more than the minds of a few million video-game-stoked teenage boys a-whirring. Philosophers, who are quicker on the self-promotional uptake than they're given credit for, seized on the film as a way to illustrate various key principles of their discipline, and in "The Matrix and Philosophy" William Irwin has collected an array of their responses. The movie is, he says, "a philosopher's Rorschach inkblot test" where thinkers detect the ideas of whatever school they like best: "existentialism, Marxism, feminism, Buddhism, nihilism, postmodernism" and more.

Monkey Hunt After 23 Women Attacked
Monkey business is anything but funny for one rural Japanese town where a roving simian has bitten 23 women over the past two days. "The monkey has been causing damage by stealing fruit since October, but this is the first time it has actually harmed people," a town official said.

Airports' Thanksgiving seizures: 15,982 knives and a brick
Some passengers still haven't gotten the word about what they can and can't take on planes.
Still, transportation officials said the airport chaos predicted by many never occurred. Passengers waited less than 10 minutes on average at security checkpoints during the first holiday travel season since an all-federal work force took over screening.

Verschwörer zum Selberbasteln
Als die Superschurken ihre Pläne zur Weltzerstörung nur auf der Leinwand auslebten, machten sie noch richtig Spaß. Kein James Bond ohne Goldfinger oder Blofeld, kein John McClane ohne Hans Gruber, kein Harry Tasker ohne Salim Abu Aziz, kein Austin Powers ohne Doctor Evil.

Aerobics for Anarchists
HE TAKES ONE LAST GULP of his Bloody Mary, stubs out his cigarette on the bar floor and heads for an empty space in front of the stage. Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” blasts through the PA system. The unlikely participant pulls off his sweat shirt, raises his arms and dips into a deep stretch a la Jane Fonda. Punk Rock Aerobics has begun.

Linking, Thinking on AIDS Day
Andre Cloud found out that he was HIV-positive last year, when he was just 17 years old. Like many others living with HIV, Cloud didn't know much about the virus when he contracted it.
"In spite of all the education and talk in the community, I for one didn't know anything until my doctor told me I had this virus, and I really think that kids my age don't really think about it much," he wrote in his weblog last year.
