Trial and error reveals master keys

Pin-and-tumbler locks only open when a key has elevated all the pins inside the mechanism to their correct positions. A normal lock with five pins can have around a million different pin configurations.

However, locks for which there is a master key have two sets of correct pin positions. The first is unique to each individual lock; the second works with the master key and is the same for every lock.

In a paper submitted to the journal IEEE Security and Privacy, Blaze shows that it is possible to work out the master key positions in a relatively short amount on time using trial and error.

US building highway to the South Pole

American engineers in the Antarctic have begun work on a highway from the giant US coastal base at McMurdo Sound to the South Pole - a distance of 1600 kilometres.

In the next few weeks the ice road should have crossed the wide expanse of the Ross ice shelf, which permanently covers the ocean, and be approaching the Transantarctic Mountains. The mountains mark the halfway point to the Pole.

School toilets cause stink across Europe

Smelly, dirty, school toilets are a problem across Europe and new legislation is needed to improve standards, researchers say.

The facilities lack ambience, are unhygienic, are a magnet for bullies and can increase the risk of constipation and incontinence.

"Going to the toilet is more than just a physical reflex. The whole ambience must be comfortable and this was not the case in the majority of these toilets," said Sue Vernon, of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
