Germany is preparing to mark the 70th anniversary of the Nazi-inspired Kristallnacht riots, amid warnings of a rise in far-right sentiment.
A ceremony will be held at Berlin's largest synagogue with a classical and pop concert held later in the day.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the country to fight racism and anti-Semitism "with determination".

Auf Wiedersehen, Tempelhof
Despite the cold, wet weather, up to 500 protesters gathered outside Tempelhof to vent their anger at the closure of the airport.
It was a last show of strength by campaigners who had fought a series of legal battles over the past decade to save Tempelhof.
Holding candles, they didn't seem too bothered by the cold or the police.

Humans made fire 790,000 years ago
A new study shows that humans had the ability to make fire nearly 790,000 years ago, a skill that helped them migrate from Africa to Europe.
By analysing flints at an archaeological site on the bank of the river Jordan, researchers at Israel's Hebrew University discovered that early civilizations had learned to light fires, a turning point that allowed them to venture into unknown lands.

Aztec leader's tomb found
Mexican archaeologists using ground-penetrating radar have detected underground chambers they believe contain the remains of Emperor Ahuizotl, who ruled the Aztecs when Columbus landed in the New World. It would be the first tomb of an Aztec ruler ever found.
The find could provide an extraordinary window into Aztec civilization at its apogee. Ahuizotl (ah-WEE-zoh-tuhl), an empire-builder who extended the Aztecs' reach as far as Guatemala, was the last emperor to complete his rule before the Spanish Conquest.
