The perm may be the unofficial hairstyle of the '80s, but the perming process originated many decades earlier—and involved machines that resembled medieval torture devices rather than sleek salon appliances. “Science has pronounced straight hair to be freakish,” declared a haircare ad in a 1922 issue of Harper's Bazaar. “Just think of the great improvement a permanent wave makes in appearance. Close your eyes and imagine fairy fingers transforming your lank strands into lovely, lasting curls, as natural looking as if you were born with them.”

15 Todestag Wau Hollands: Holt Euch die Informationen
Vor 15 Jahren starb Wau Holland, Mitgründer des Chaos Computer Clubs und erster Redakteur der "Datenschleuder", im Alter von 49 Jahren. Sein Begriff der Informationsfreiheit ist noch heute aktuell. Als Wau Holland 2001 starb, war es für viele Hacker so, als würden sie ihren Vater verlieren. Beim Camp Hacking at Large liefen die Tränen und auch die Foren von heise online waren voll der Trauer. Denkt man von heute aus an den CCC-Mitgründer zurück, so kommt unweigerlich ein weiterer historischer Gedenktag hinzu: Vor 30 Jahren, im Herbst 1986, übergab eine "Beratungsteam Hamburger GbR" benannte Firma der jungen Bundestagsfraktion der Grünen ein Strategiepapier mit dem "Entwurf einer sozialverträglichen Gestaltungsaltemative für den geplanten Computereinsatz". Dieser Text des jungen Chaos Computer Clubs zur "Wühl-Periode" der Grünen wimmelt von Formulierungen, für die Wau Holland verantwortlich war.

That wasn't a Mayan lost city, just another example of the culture of hype
I t was a good story while it lasted: A 15-year-old boy discovered a lost city by theorizing that a modern star map would correlate with ancient Mayan settlements. It seemed to fit the common understanding of the Maya as peaceful stargazers, centuries ahead of their time in astronomical observation and deeply mystical. It only makes sense they’d plan their cities to align with constellations. The teenage scientist, William Gadoury, of Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec, overlaid constellations and known Maya cities. When he found a gap where it seemed a settlement ought to have been, he consulted satellite imagery and found shapes the looked man-made. Suddenly, the lost city story went viral.

'I Have A Dream' Speech Full Transcript And Video: Read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 Speech On Its 50th Anniversary
August 28 marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The historic rally, which attracted more than 250,000 people to the United States capital, Washington, D.C., was marked by one of the most famous speeches given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., titled “I Have a Dream.”
The 1963 March on Washington, as it is more commonly known, was one of the largest human rights demonstrations in the U.S. history. Conceived in 1962 by A. Philip Randolph, a civil rights activist who sought to improve the socio-economic conditions of African Americans, the rally idea initially didn’t get much support from other leaders. But Randolph eventually convinced the heads of five major civil rights organizations, including Roy Wilkins of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Whitney Young Jr. of the National Urban League, James Farmer of the Conference of Racial Equality (CORE), John Lewis of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and Dr. King, of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

Mayan prophecy: The world won’t end, as a newfound calendar goes on and on and on
The ancient Mayans were masters of time, keepers of good calendars.
And now we have one of their timekeepers’ workrooms to prove it.
In a striking find, archaeologists in Guatemala report the discovery of a small building whose walls display not only a stunningly preserved mural of a brightly adorned Mayan king, but also calendars that destroy any notion that the Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012.
These deep-time calendars can be used to count thousands of years into the past and future, countering pop-culture and New Age ideas that Mayan calendars ended on Dec. 21, 2012, (or Dec. 23, depending on who’s counting), thereby predicting the end of the world.

After 244 Years, Encyclopaedia Britannica Stops the Presses
After 244 years, the Encyclopaedia Britannica is going out of print.
Those coolly authoritative, gold-lettered reference books that were once sold door-to-door by a fleet of traveling salesmen and displayed as proud fixtures in American homes will be discontinued, company executives said.
In an acknowledgment of the realities of the digital age — and of competition from the Web site Wikipedia — Encyclopaedia Britannica will focus primarily on its online encyclopedias and educational curriculum for schools. The last print version is the 32-volume 2010 edition, which weighs 129 pounds and includes new entries on global warming and the Human Genome Project.

In der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung ist rechte Gewalt männlich - bis jetzt. Mit der Terroristin Beate Z. wird nun die weibliche Seite des braunen Netzwerks sichtbar. Tatsächlich sind immer mehr Frauen der Szene gewaltbereit. Sie wollen nicht mehr nur die "Mädels" sein, sondern "politische Soldatinnen" mit der "naturgegebenen Verpflichtung" als deutsche Mutter.

MAD forschte im Umfeld der Terrorzelle
Deutsche Nachrichtendienste hatten offenbar zeitweise engeren Kontakt zum Umfeld der Zwickauer Terrorzelle als bisher bekannt. So soll der thüringische Verfassungsschutz Ende der 1990er-Jahre mindestens drei V-Leute im Umfeld des Neonazi-Trios im Einsatz gehabt haben. Dies wirft erneut die Frage auf, warum die Behörde nichts über den Verbleib von Beate Z. und den zu Monatsbeginn tot aufgefundenen Uwe B. und Uwe M. wusste.
Zudem ermittelte nach ARD-Informationen auch der Militärische Abschirmdienst (MAD) der Bundeswehr im Umfeld der drei Neonazis. Eine Verbindung könnte der Sprengstoff sein, den das Trio zum Bau von Rohrbomben eingesetzt hatte. Die Explosivstoffe könnten aus Bundeswehr-Beständen stammen. Laut "Focus" wurde der MAD kurz nach dem Untertauchen des Trios 1998 über dessen Aufenthaltsort informiert. Ein V-Mann des MAD habe diese Information damals an eine Außenstelle der Behörde in Leipzig weitergegeben - die Information sei aber in der MAD-Zentrale in Köln liegengeblieben.

Die Mordserie der Zwickauer Terrorgruppe offenbart eine ganz neue Dimension des Rechtsterrorismus in Deutschland. Das Grundproblem liege aber nicht bei Einzeltätern, sondern in der Mitte der Gesellschaft, sagt Anetta Kahane von der Amadeu Antonio Stiftung. Das "Gelaber von Deutschen und 'nicht so richtigen Deutschen'" sei unwürdig.
