R.I.P. Star Wars: 1977 - 2008
Friends...Tatooinians...Countrymen - Lend me your Yoda ears. I have not come to praise Star Wars, but to bury it, once and for all.
It’s never fun to bury a friend, especially one you’ve watched wither away and die right before your eyes. Harder still is the realization that, for many, this onetime companion continues to live on, bigger and brighter than ever. Two decades ago, a perfect little trilogy was formed, a series of science fiction films that took the genre into worlds of unbelievable imagination and action-oriented invention. Spawned from this matinee mannered speculation was a fanbase so devoted, so affected by what creator George Lucas had wrought that they supported each and every facet of its growing legacy. Even horrific examples of capitalization like the Wookie-ccentric Christmas Special held a special place in the hearts of the devoted.

Happy Birthday, Stanley Kubrick!
Yes, he is a shining light of cinema, but he fits Listening Post like a virtual glove. He would have celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, if he had lived to witness the musical evolution of the form he fast-forwarded. His films irrevocably changed the relationship between film and music, from the juxtaposition of spaceship ballets and "The Blue Danube" to the destabilizing pairing of rape and "Singin' in the Rain." Sometimes it hurt to watch, but it was often impossible to turn your eyes, and ears, away from anything Stanley Kubrick made.

the art of the tracking shot
When Garrett Brown invented the steadicam back in 1976 the world of cinema changed forever. The steadicam allowed the camera to do things it never could have done before on bulky dollies and cranes. Here is a short list of some of the most memorable shots from films old and young that exemplify the beauty of the camera attached to a steadicam.

The Secret History of Star Wars
The Secret History of Star Wars is a new full-length e-book exploring the writing and creation of the Star Wars saga. Culled from over 400 sources and filled with quotes from people such as George Lucas, Gary Kurtz and Mark Hamill, The Secret History of Star Wars traces all the way back to 1973 to examine how the first 14-page treatment that began the series came to be and was slowly built, draft by draft, year by year and movie by movie. Covering a period of over four decades, you will discover how George Lucas got his ideas for the original film, how Darth Vader was made into Luke Skywalker's father in 1978 and forever altered the arc of the story, what happened to the infamous third trilogy in the series and how the prequel stories came to be. The book also reveals the style and method of Lucas himself and how his personal life affected and shaped the story, for better and worse. This is a book which challenges many legends surrounding the series and places the films in a new light. For the more casual fan this will be a mesmerising read and for those who think they know everything about the series, prepare to be surprised!

Throwing bones in the air as 2001 turns 40
STANLEY KUBRICK's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY had its world premiere April 2, 1968, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C. Which would mean that Roger Ebert had been in the Sun-Times pages for just over a year when this review ran: "It was e. e. cummings, the poet, who said he'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance. I imagine cummings would not have enjoyed Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which stars dance but birds do not sing. The fascinating thing about this film is that it fails on the human level but succeeds magnificently on a cosmic scale."

The Outrageous Fortune of Terry Gilliam
A look at the on-set trials and tribulations of maverick director Terry Gilliam, and how he’s managed to roll with the punches that the studio system–and God–has thrown his way.
Film directing is a profession often fraught with impossible challenges. Woody Allen once said being a director meant “the truck of fresh compromises pulls up each day, and by the end of the film you look at the finished print and think unutterable thoughts.” No director in history knows more about compromise than Terry Gilliam. Part and parcel of being a visionary is being constantly told you can’t get the shot. Forces of Darkness conspire to defeat you, often in the form of studio executives, sometimes in the form of Nature herself. Let’s look at some of the roadblocks thrown in Gilliam’s path.

30 Years of LucasFilm Christmas Cards
I live down the street from LucasFilm, and I’ve even been in the facilities in The Presidio, but I’m not on the LucasFilm Holiday Card List. For the last 30 years, Lucasfilm has created special holiday greeting cards for its employees and business partners.
