Steve Martin to host 75th Oscars
Actor Steve Martin will host the 75th anniversary Oscars in Los Angeles next year. Martin takes up the role for the second time, taking over from Whoopi Goldberg.
"I'm very pleased to be hosting the Oscars again, because fear and nausea always make me lose weight," said Martin.

Hollywood's version of Napster
DVDXCopy released next week
St. Louis-based 321 Studios, developer of DVD X Copy, plans to make the software available for download starting Monday at its site, dvdxcopy.com, for $100.
Hollywood insisted on having copy protection built into DVDs from the format's formative days. The only test was in 1999, when a Norwegian teen posted a program to get around the encryption. The Motion Picture Association of America successfully sued to have it removed from the Internet.

Actor-turned-GOP activist Arnold Schwarzenegger is putting his high-wattage star power and money behind a ballot measure to fund after-school care, a commitment many think may be a first step toward a run for governor in 2006. The 55-year-old former Mr. Universe, who considered and then backed away from a gubernatorial run this year, is sponsoring Proposition 49, which would dedicate $550 million a year in state money to after-school programs for elementary and junior high schools.

Nicolas Cage Sells Comic Books for $1.6 Million
Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has sold his personal comic book collection, including a copy of Superman's 1938 pulp debut, at auction for more than $1.6 million, organizers of the sale said on Friday. Cage's copy of Action Comics #1, the 1938 comic featuring the first appearance of Superman, sold for $86,250, more than $15,000 above its estimated value, auction organizers said.

Legal counsel for the actress say she is not interested in cutting a plea deal and is ready to head to court this week to face shoplifting charges. BBC 'pays £10m' for the magic of Harry Potter - how much was YOUR download?
The BBC has won a bidding war with ITV and other commercial broadcasters for the first terrestrial screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is claimed that the BBC paid £10 million for the film but Potter fans will have to wait until late next year at the earliest before seeing it. No date has been set but there is speculation that it could be BBC1's blockbuster family film on Christmas Day.
