MATRIX2

Bullet Time was just the beginning. F/x guru John Gaeta reinvents cinematography with The Matrix Reloaded. I'm sitting in a former naval barracks in Alameda, California, watching the digital assembly of a human face. Bones, teeth, glistening eyes. Layer upon layer. Finally the hair and skin, the creases and tiny scars that make us who we are. The face blinks and breathes. Then it snarls, and my skin crawls.

Agent Smith is back, and he's pissed.

How George Harrison saved Monty Python

Monty Python's The Life of Brian was the most controversial film of its time, incurring the wrath of religious zealots across the world. But, as Robert Sellers reveals, the publicity only helped the film - and its principal backer, George Harrison. Out in Tunisia, a couple of sand dunes along from where George Lucas shot Star Wars, the Monty Python team were preparing their own little contribution to late 20th-century culture - Life of Brian.

Charges dropped against Toronto woman charged after whistling near movie set

Mary Fish whistled a happy tune Wednesday.

The 54-year-old woman saw charges against her dropped, ending a 29-month ordeal that began Oct. 16, 2000 when she was arrested after whistling near a Toronto movie shoot.

The charges were stayed after lawyer Robert Rotenberg argued Fish's rights were violated because of the delay in bringing the case to trial, slated to start Wednesday.

Boycott the Oscars

As they said during the Vietnam era, "What if they gave a war and nobody came?" So think of the significance, with this insoluble invasion of Iraq coinciding with the insipid Oscars, if they gave the biggest awards show in the world and nobodies came.

Hollywood returns to McCarthyism
Oscars blacklist stars in bid to prevent peace protest speeches

THE backlash against prominent stars opposing any attack on Iraq has impacted on this year’s Oscars, with organisers drawing up a blacklist of people who will not be allowed a platform to air anti-war views.

Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, Vanessa Redgrave, George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman and Spike Lee are among those who will not be speaking, amid fears they could turn the ceremony into an anti-war rally.

In a move denounced by some as a return to McCarthyism, star presenters have been ordered to stick to scripts, while winners, who the producers have no control over, could find their acceptance speeches cut if they say anything much more than a brief thank you.
