Gmail may hand over IP addresses of journalists

A California court has issued a subpoena demanding Google reveal the IP addresses of journalists writing for a corruption busting journal from the Caribbean.

The August 28 subpoena, issued by the Superior Court, County of Santa Clara, as part of a "libel tourism" action taken by non-US property developers, demands detailed information about the operators of "tcijournal@gmail.com". The account is the main email address of the TCI Journal, the most influential journal covering the Turks & Caicos Islands. The Islands are a tourist mecca and tax haven in the Caribbean sea, and until August 14 were an independent British protectorate.

Integrating 50 centimeter data from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency

Today at the Camp Roberts exercise we integrated 50 centimeter data form the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) into our mapping stack, which is acting as a "incident" visualization dashboard. In short, Robert and Tom have built a lightweight Drupal aggregation hub sucking in Pakistan and Afghanistan incident reports coming in from both Relief Web and IRIN. The incidents are being geo-tagged thanks to Alex's (who is back in the DC office) work on a lightweight geo-coding tool that we have been investing in with the support of the Knight Foundation.

Not All Of Google May Be Available In Your Country

The name is “world wide web”, but it’s not always. What are some of Google’s services that will only work in one country, or a limited set of countries? (Unless perhaps you route around the block – geolocation by IP, as it’s often implemented, is not an impossible hurdle.) Here are some examples

Ich habe von der Ankündigung der Datenkrake Google , ein eigenes Betriebssystem zu entwickeln, nur die ersten drei Absätze gelesen. Da kommt dieser Satz:

Google tracking cookie spans AdSense, DoubleClick

Yes, Google is using the same tracking cookie across both its AdSense and DoubleClick online ad contraptions. This allows the Mountain View ad giant to collect your surfing habits as you move from AdSense partner sites to sites using DoubleClick's ad management platform - although the company indicates that at least in some cases, the data is not combined.

Google patent feeds ebook 'monopoly' infrared 3D - The world is flat. The page is not

If there were any doubt that Google is in a prime position to establish a legal monopoly in the world of digital books, the US patent office has snuffed it out.

Earlier this year, as spotted by The New Scientist and churned up late last week by National Public Radio, Google patented a book-scanning technology that can digitize the world's texts without subjecting them to the cruel treatment of a flatbed scanner.
