Schlammschlacht der Netz-Giganten
"Eine billige Nachahmung" nennt ein Google-Ingenieur Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing. Microsoft-Mitarbeiter keilen zurück und werfen Google "Klick-Betrug" vor. Der Marktführer wolle nur vom "wahren Problem" ablenken - den Klickfabriken, die Suchmaschinen zumüllen.
Diebe! Lügner! Betrüger!
Der öffentliche Schlagabtausch zwischen Mitarbeitern der Microsoft-Suchmaschine Bing und dem Marktführer Google eskaliert.
Begonnen hatte die Auseinandersetzung, als Google öffentlich erklärte, Bing würde mit Google-Suchergebnissen die eigenen Treffer aufbessern. Google schmuggelte Links zu sinnlosen Zeichenketten in den eigenen Index - wenig später sollen sie bei dem Rivalen aufgetaucht sein. Das kommentierte Google-Manager Amit Singhal im Firmenblog süffisant: "Anders ausgedrückt wirken einige der Bing-Ergebnisse mehr und mehr wie eine unvollständige, fade Version der Google-Treffer - eine billige Nachahmung."
Nun reagiert Microsoft.
Der für Online-Geschäfte zuständige Manager Yusuf Mehdi nennt Googles Vorwürfe eine " Beleidigung". Er poltert zurück, der Suchmaschinen-Primus habe Bing "manipuliert" und zwar per "Klick-Betrug". Mehdi wörtlich: "Richtig gehört, dieselbe Art von Angriff, wie ihn Spammer im Web nutzen, um Verbraucher zu täuschen und irreführende Suchergebnisse zu schaffen".

Microsoft: 'We do not copy Google's results'
On February 1, Google went public (via SearchEngineLand.com) with claims that Microsoft is copying Google search results with Bing.
Is Microsoft copping to the claim? Here’s the original response Microsoft is providing to folks who are asking:
“We use multiple signals and approaches in ranking search results. The overarching goal is to do a better job determining the intent of the search so we can provide the most relevant answer to a given query. Opt-in programs like the toolbar help us with clickstream data, one of many input signals we and other search engines use to help rank sites,” said Stefan Weitz, Director, Bing.

Microsoft tappt in die Google-Falle
Für die Treffer seiner Suchmaschine Bing nutzt Microsoft offenbar auch Ergebnisse der Konkurrenz. Google schmuggelte Links zu sinnlosen Zeichenketten in den eigenen Index - wenig später sollen sie bei dem Rivalen aufgetaucht sein.
Im Wettstreit von Google und Microsoft auf dem Suchmaschinenmarkt geht es neuerdings zu wie in einem Krimi. Google stellte in einer aufwendigen Geheimaktion eine Falle für den Rivalen auf, um zu beweisen, dass Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing auch auf Google-Treffer zurückgreift, um die eigenen Ergebnisse zu verbessern. Nach Google-Angaben wurde Bing dabei in mehreren Fällen ertappt.

Google slips $3.1bn through 'Double Irish' tax loophole
Google has saved $3.1bn in taxes since 2007 by shuttling its foreign profits through Ireland and the Netherlands, then on to a haven in Bermuda, according to the company's regulatory filings.
As reported by Bloomberg Businessweek, Google uses techniques known as "Double Irish" and "Dutch Sandwich" to lower its foreign tax rate to a scant 2.3 per cent. This is the lowest rate among the top five US tech giants, according to the report.

Google sued for scanning emails of non-Gmail users
A Texas man has fired a legal broadside against Gmail in a federal lawsuit that claims the Google service violates the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986.
Keith Dunbar of Bowie County, Texas, claims that emails he sent from a non-Gmail service to Gmail users were scanned by Google algorithms without his consent. The algorithms are designed to serve Gmail users targeted ads based on the content of messages they receive.

In a country where privacy concerns are paramount, many Germans are particularly uneasy about Google's Street View service. The US Internet giant's plans to launch a mapping feature for 20 German cities before the end of the year has raised the ire of many who would prefer that their homes did not feature on the service.

Google Buys Microdrone, Imaginations Run Wild
German publication Wirtschaftswoche (“Economy Week”) says that German manufacturer Microdrones has delivered a cam-equipped flying mini drone to Google. Microdrones boss Mr. Juerss is quoted as saying “We have good chances for a long term business relationship with Google” (is he just overly optimistic? Google wasn’t available for comment to the magazine). According to him the drones “are superbly suited to deliver more up-to-date recordings for mapping service Google Earth.” Another potential use mentioned by Juerss is inspecting wind farms.

Der amerikanische Internetkonzern Google testet offenbar den Einsatz kamerabestückter ziviler Drohnen. Datenschützer fürchten einen tieferen Eingriff in die Privatsphäre.
Der deutsche Drohnenhersteller Microdrones bestätigte der WirtschaftsWoche, bereits eine kamerabestückte Mini-Drohne an die Google-Zentrale geliefert zu haben. „Wir haben gute Chancen, mit Google dauerhaft ins Geschäft zu kommen“, sagt Microdrones-Chef Sven Juerss.

When you are part of a company that is trying to digitize all the books in the world, the first question you often get is: “Just how many books are out there?”
Well, it all depends on what exactly you mean by a “book.” We’re not going to count what library scientists call “works,” those elusive "distinct intellectual or artistic creations.” It makes sense to consider all editions of “Hamlet” separately, as we would like to distinguish between -- and scan -- books containing, for example, different forewords and commentaries.

Scroogle's future in doubt
The long-term future of proxy server Scroogle is seriously in doubt, according to operator Daniel Brandt. Scroogle has scraped Google pages since 2002 by piping results through an anonymizing server. By using the service surfers could remain anonymous, but more importantly use Google without the compulsory 40-year cookie.
