Adwords bei Google dürfen nicht auf fremde Werbung verweisen
In Frankreich hat ein Gericht entschieden, dass Suchworte bei Google, die gleichzeitig Markennamen sind, nicht mehr auf Links von Konkurrenten verweisen dürfen, die diese Markennamen in ihre Werbung einbauen. Diese sogenannten "Adwords" sorgen gleichzeitig bei Google dafür, dass Textwerbung die im Zusammenhang mit den Suchworten steht eingeblendet wird.

Frequent Search Engine Users, Google Is Watching and Counting
The Web search service Google has quietly started placing a counter on its home page for a small number of its most frequent users.
Most Google users do not have it, but a select few now have a no-frills counter that with each search clicks higher, noting "You have done 479 searches," or whatever the actual number.

Google search by Location U.S only
Google Labs has released Search by Location. Enter some search terms and an address, city, or zip code and Google will return a bunch of results which contain nearby addresses and plot them on a map.

Google im Visier von Microsoft
Microsoft will möglicherweise bald eine eigene Internet-Suchmaschine anbieten. Nach US-Medienberichten betrachtet der Software-Riese Google "immer mehr als Konkurrenten". Gleichzeitig betonte MSN-Marketing-Chef Bob Visse, dass sein Konzern "den Kunden ein besseres Such-Tool" bieten könne.

Microsoft Says to Take Aim at Google
Microsoft Corp. the world's No. 1 software maker, on Wednesday said it is taking aim at privately held Google Inc., the Web-search company that's so popular its name is used as a verb.
"We do view Google more and more as a competitor. We believe that we can provide consumers with a better product and a better user experience. That's something that we're actively looking at doing," Bob Visse, director of marketing for Microsoft's MSN Internet services division, said.
Microsoft would not be the first Web portal provider to step into the Web search segment. Last month, Internet media company Yahoo Inc. closed its $235 million purchase of Internet-search company Inktomi Corp.

100 Google-Tricks als Paperware
Tara Calishain hat als Herausgeberin des Newsletters Research Buzz im Laufe der Zeit viele Tipps und Tricks für den Umgang mit Google gesammelt. Unter dem Titel "Google Hacks" bringt sie jetzt gemeinsam mit Rael Dornfest eine Sammlung der wichtigsten "Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools" heraus. Auch wenn der Titel es nahelegen mag -- verbotene oder halblegale Hintertürchen für die Abfrage oder die Manipulation der Ergebnisse finden sich in dem Band nicht.

Google unter "Big-Brother"-Verdacht
Die Bürgerrechtsgruppe Public Information Research hat Google in den USA für die "Big Brother Awards" nominiert.
Ursache für das Misstrauen gegen die wohl derzeit populärste Suchmaschine sind die "langlebigen" Cookies, die Google auf den Rechnern seiner Nutzer platziert. Mit diesen könnte die Suchmaschine, die täglich mehr als 100 Millionen Anfragen bearbeitet, genaue Nutzerprofile erstellen.

Google buys Pyra in big boost for blogging
Google, which runs the Web's premier search site, has purchased Pyra Labs, a San Francisco company that created some of the earliest technology for writing weblogs, the increasingly popular personal and opinion journals.
The Thursday buyout is a huge boost to an enormously diverse genre of online publishing -- also known as ``blogging'' -- that has begun to change the equations of online news and information.
