Wissenschaftler an der Purdue University in Indiana, USA, haben eine Suchmaschine entwickelt, die sich von anderen in einem wichtigen Detail unterscheidet: Gesucht wird nicht über Text, sondern mittels Skizzen.

Google and Yahoo! ban gambling ads

nternet giants Google and Yahoo! will stop carrying adverts for online casinos, blaming a "lack of clarity" in US regulations.

US prosecutors last month warned companies that running ads for offshore online casinos was equivalent to "aiding and abetting". It is illegal to run an online gambling site from within the US.

Google mail is evil - privacy advocates

This week should have seen a public relations triumph for Google. The company began offering a free e-mail service with 100 times as much storage as Yahoo's $59.99 service. Instead the criticism has taken Google by surprise, as privacy advocates who had never before voiced criticism stepped forward. Google has previously responded to privacy concerns by saying, "we're nice, trust us" or pointing users to the company's mission statement of "do no evil". Such trite sentiments didn't work this time; even The Drudge Report piled in.

Web sites that contain collections that are copyright free

I have developed a new kind of search engine that searches databases that are built with an editor. I am looking for web sites that contain collections that are copyright free and can be used without permission.

Why Google Wants To Read Your E-Mail

Google's plan to offer free Web-based e-mail has raised worries among privacy advocates that the service could make it easier for law enforcement to conduct surveillance of its users.

Google said Wednesday it plans to offer an e-mail service, called Gmail, that would give account owners 1 GB of free storage. Gmail would also offer search capabilities allowing users to find specific pieces of information buried within tens of thousands of e-mails. The size of the storage would blow away offerings from rivals like Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail.

Google spurns RSS for rising blog format

Google's Blogger service is bypassing Really Simple Syndication in favor of an alternative technology, a move that has sparked more discord in a bitter dispute over Web log syndication formats.

The search giant, which acquired Blogger.com last year, began allowing the service's million-plus members to syndicate their online diaries to other Web sites last month. To implement the feature, it chose the new Atom format instead of the widely used, older RSS.

Using Google?

On the 3rd of February 2004, this page (or rather the page that was here) was swamped by requests and the server subsequentially failed. The reason was traced to Google introducing a fractal looking logo (see below), which when clicked, performed an image search for "julia" and "fractal". The two most interesting resulting images on the top row of the list were on this page.

The Coming Search Wars

AT the World Economic Forum in Switzerland last week, Microsoft, the software heavyweight, and Google, the scrappy Internet search company, eyed each other like wary prizefighters entering the ring.

Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, stated his admiration for the "high level of I.Q." of Google's designers. "We took an approach that I now realize was wrong,'' he said of his company's earlier decision to ignore the search market. But, he added pointedly, "we will catch them.''

Hidden Google Tools

Even if you consider yourself a Google expert, these "hidden" tools and resources let you push the search engine's capabilities to the max.

If you want all of Google's tools and options conveniently displayed on a single screen, try FaganFinder. I like it because I am reminded of all the choices I have and settings I can tweak, including toggling the Duplicates Filter on or off, using the file format search, and setting the number of results per page. It even has handy links for typing non-English letters.
