Google Video Plusbox
While searching Google for nightwish videos, Razvan Antonescu spotted this video plusbox*. Alongside a snippet from Google Video, a plus icon appeared with a link reading “show video"; a click on it slides open a direct video result. I can’t reproduce it, so it may be a new prototype – does anyone else get this?

Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population
It is estimated that over 90% of all new information produced in the world is being stored on magnetic media, most of it on hard disk drives. Despite their importance, there is relatively little published work on the failure patterns of disk drives, and the key factors that affect their lifetime. Most available data are either based on extrapolation from accelerated aging experiments or from relatively modest sized field studies. Moreover, larger population studies rarely have the infrastructure in place to collect health signals from components in operation, which is critical information for detailed failure analysis.

My YouTube accounts have been deleted
Deleted accounts are not quite part of the plan! This is now a censorship issue.
My NickGisburne and Gisburne2000 accounts were deleted because of 'Inappropriate Content', basically a video of material (no added commentary from me) from the Qur'an. I added nothing to that video, I was merely using material from the Muslim Holy Book, and for that I was removed from YouTube, along with all my videos, and everyone's subscriptions to me (over 500).
Two stories in the news offer contrasting approaches by Web companies to questions of free speech. First YouTube: reader skraps notes that the Google property has recently banned the popular atheist commentator Nick Gisburne. Gisburne had been posting videos with logical arguments against Christian beliefs

Want to cross the road? Don't ask Google Maps
30-second walk becomes 10.4km epic road trip
Here's the scenario: you're in Oz's fine city of Sydney and you need to get from the Shelbourne Hotel at 200 Sussex Street to Google's headquarters across the road at 201 Sussex Street. Naturally, this being a potentially complex manoeuvre, it's probably best to consult Google Maps Australia to get the optimum route.

Google's anti-phishing plugin leaked passwords
A recent press release from web security provider Finjan Inc. has exposed a security flaw with Google's anti-phishing browser extension for the Firefox web browser. Apparently, the extension accidentally gathered some users' e-mail addresses and passwords. Finjan informed Google of the problem earlier this month before making their findings public, and Google has since released an updated version of their plugin that fixed the problem.

How to get Google to notice you
Why did so many other family therapy websites pop to the top of Google (GOOG) search results listings, while her site was nowhere to be found?
It's a question posed by thousands of small-business owners every day as they seek new customers online rather than through traditional Yellow Pages directories. These days, if a company website can't be found on Google, it basically doesn't exist.

Volcanoes Erupt on Google Earth
Alaska's Aleutian Islands chain is a geologic, fire-breathing dragon with dozens of active volcanoes. To prevent a Vesuvius-style disaster, researchers at the Alaska Volcano Observatory have begun channeling eruption data into Google Earth.

Details of Google’s Latest Security Hole
I’ve now received confirmation from Google’s Security Team that the latest vulnerability Philipp posted about has been fixed. After carrying out some investigations of my own, I believe this is the case – so I’m going to share with you what the problem was and how I was able to exploit it. In doing so, I hope to educate other developers about the potential flaws that can occur in growingly complex web applications.
