YouTube video-fingerprinting due in September
YouTube will unveil FBI-quality video-fingerprinting technology in September. Well, that's what Google hopes. Or, rather, Google wants a judge to think that's what it hopes.
On Friday, with Google facing a three-pronged copyright trial at a federal court in New York City, a company lawyer told the presiding judge that its YouTube video-sharing site would unveil a long-delayed video recognition system this fall, "hopefully in September." According to the lawyer, Philip Beck, the system will be as sophisticated as fingerprinting technology used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, The Associated Press reports. That would be the fingerprinting technology the FBI uses for fingerprints - not low-quality web videos.

The Man Who Could Kill YouTube
Bob Tur is the little guy who is suing one giant (Google) to do what another giant (Viacom) probably never will -- shut YouTube down.
A single bottle broke the calm, shattering in the late-afternoon sun. Then another...and another. A few men walked into Tom's Liquor and walked out quicker than would be possible if they'd paid. A family followed, tossing groceries into the intersection of Florence and Normandie in the heart of South Central Los Angeles. Bob Tur, a pilot and photojournalist, hovered above the unfolding chaos in his helicopter, along with his copilot, his camerawoman wife, his lawyer, and a 9mm semiautomatic pistol. Fifteen years later, he still recalls the details of the scene with the precision of a war memory. There was Larry Tarvin, who was pulled from his truck and kicked in the ribs, shoulder, and face. That's when the shots started. Tur's chopper began taking hits as the throng below pummeled another trucker, Reginald Denny, with a cement block, a tire iron, and a fire extinguisher.

Google cookies will 'auto delete'
Google has said that its cookies, tiny files stored on a computer when a user visits a website, will auto delete after two years.
They will be deleted unless the user returns to a Google site within the two-year period, prompting a re-setting of the file's lifespan.
The company's cookies are used to store preference data for sites, such as default language and to track searches.
All search engines and most websites store cookies on a computer.
Currently, Google's are set to delete after 2039.

Google loses “Gmail” trademark case
A court in Germany today banned Google from using the name "Gmail" for its popular webmail service following a trademark suit filed by the founder of G-Mail.
Daniel Giersch (33), started using the name G-Mail in 2000, four years before Google released "Gmail".
"Google infringed the young businessman's trademark that had been previously been registered," said the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in its judgement.

Google cookie cuts $600m data center in Iowa
Iowa's Governor Chet Culver – you can't make a name like that up – bragged today about his state's good fortune. Google will set up shop in Council Bluffs, Iowa on a 55-acre site. The data center announcement follows similar recent deals in North Carolina, South Carolina and Oklahoma for Google centers. And, when we say "similar," we mean it.
Google seems to have picked $600m as it default data center figure to hand to the press. That price, according to information provided by the company, includes the cost of the land, the construction of the building and the purchase of all the computer gear. Google has handed out the same $600m figure in all four states, which seems odd since it's creating new buildings in some locations, while retrofitting buildings in others.
