Surfing Google may be harmful to your security
A well-known researcher specializing in website security has strongly criticized safety on Google, arguing the world's biggest search engine needlessly puts its millions of users at risk.
"Google is and will be and always has been vulnerable," Robert Hansen, CEO of secTheory, told a standing-room-only audience at the Defcon security conference in Las Vegas. "They haven't been open with consumers. Ultimately, this all comes down the the fact that they just want to track you guys."

Google To Develop ISP Throttling Detector
Google has been very vocal on its stance for net neutrality. Now, Richard Whitt--Senior Policy Director for Google--announces that Google will take an even more active role in the debate by arming consumers with the tools to determine first-hand if their broadband connections are being monkeyed with by their ISPs.

Sergey Brin books joyride on Russian rocket
Google kingpin Sergey Brin has put down $5m to book a ride into space aboard a Russian rocket, according to reports. American orbital-joyride travel agency Space Adventures revealed the move yesterday.
"I am a big believer in the exploration and commercial development of the space frontier and am looking forward to the possibility of going into space," said Brin, quoted by the BBC.

Google supports US privacy law
In a letter to Congressman Joe Barton Google's chief lobbyist Alan Davidson said: "Google supports the adoption of a comprehensive federal privacy law that would accomplish several goals such as building consumer trust and protections; creating a uniform framework for privacy, which would create consistent levels of privacy from one jurisdiction to another; and putting penalties in place to punish and dissuade bad actors."

Google has lots to do with intelligence
When the nation's intelligence agencies wanted a computer network to better share information about everything from al Qaeda to North Korea, they turned to a big name in the technology industry to supply some of the equipment: Google Inc.
The Mountain View company sold the agencies servers for searching documents, marking a small victory for the company and its little-known effort to do business with the government.
"We are a very small group, and even a lot of people in the federal government don't know that we exist," said Mike Bradshaw, who leads Google's federal government sales team and its 18 employees.

Google-Funded Chinese P2P Site Xunlei Sued For Copyright Infringement
Rafat Ali of Paid Content is reporting that the Chinese peer-to-peer (P2P) site, Xunlei, is being sued by the MPA for repeated copyright violation of distributing pirated films. The lawsuit [PDF] names numerous infractions and is seeking 7 million yuan ($1 million USD) in damages. And Google factors in to this story as they invested a reported $5 million into the company last year, which followed $20 million the company had previously raised in funding from Morningside Ventures and IDG VC Partners.

Hackers hijack web search results
A huge campaign to poison web searches and trick people into visiting malicious websites has been thwarted.
The booby-trapped websites came up in search results for search terms such as "Christmas gifts" and "hospice".
Windows users falling for the trick risked having their machine hijacked and personal information plundered.

Google Invests in Green with Renewable Energy Initiative
The Mountain View company announced on Tuesday a new research and development group whose mandate will be to continue to develop electricity from renewable energy sources much cheaper (and cleaner) than coal. The new initiative, dubbed Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, will primarily target energy sources like advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies and enhanced geothermal, according to Google co-founder Larry Page, and the company plans to shell out tens of millions of dollars in 2008 on R&D and related investments.

Is The Google/Firefox Relationship A Conflict Of Interest?
CNET's Chris Soghoian raises some concerns about Google's close relationship with the Mozilla Foundation, the non-profit that owns the Firefox trademark. He points out that the vast majority of Mozilla's revenue comes from Google, and notes a number of ways that Firefox is configured to use Google as the default for various online services. Soghoian is right that close scrutiny of these sorts of relationships is healthy. However, it's pretty hard to get too worked up about the specific problems he cites.

Google funds hold Firefox fate (for sure)
If there was any doubt that Google has the power to pull the plug on Firefox, it's been laid to rest.
This week, the Mozilla Foundation released its 2006 financial statement, telling the world that Google provides 85 per cent of the revenue for the foundation and its Mozilla Corp. subsidiary.
