Users view Google Maps more than a billion times each week: It’s one of the world’s largest sources of geographic data and the first place many of us turn when we need to locate something. So it makes sense that, when a Gaza City-based journalism group claimed that the nation of Palestine had literally been wiped from Google’s maps, readers were, well — indignant. Dozens of Middle-Eastern news outlets have covered the “backlash,” and tens of thousands have Facebook-shared and tweeted it.

A Bug in Chrome Makes It Easy to Pirate Movies
For years Hollywood has waged a war on piracy, using digital rights management technologies to fight bootleggers who illegally copy movies and distribute them. For just as long, hackers have found ways to bypass these protections. Now two security researchers have found a new way, using a vulnerability in the system Google uses to stream media through its Chrome browser. They say people could exploit the flaw to save illegal copies of movies they stream on Chrome using sites like Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Did Google Manipulate Search for Hillary?
Google is manipulating Autocomplete search results to help improve Hillary Clinton’s online reputation. SourceFed told the Internet about it, so it must be true. They had screenshots, big words, and talked with their hands. They sounded like an important thought leader you should trust.
Well, I have screenshots and I’ve been getting paid to manipulate Google’s search results for years versus getting paid to make sensational videos on YouTube to sell ads based on view count.

With Zee.Aero and Kitty Hawk, the Google co-founder looks to the skies. Three years ago, Silicon Valley developed a fleeting infatuation with a startup called Zee.Aero. The company had set up shop right next to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., which was curious, because Google tightly controls most of the land in the area. Then a reporter spotted patent filings showing Zee.Aero was working on a small, all-electric plane that could take off and land vertically—a flying car. In the handful of news articles that ensued, all the startup would say was that it wasn’t affiliated with Google or any other technology company. Then it stopped answering media inquiries altogether. Employees say they were even given wallet-size cards with instructions on how to deflect questions from reporters. After that, the only information that trickled out came from amateur pilots, who occasionally posted pictures of a strange-looking plane taking off from a nearby airport.

E-Mails legen engere Beziehung zwischen NSA und Google nahe
Jetzt veröffentlichte Mailwechsel zwischen Google-Vertretern und dem NSA-Chef deuten auf eine engere Kooperation zwischen beiden hin. In den vergangenen Monaten war Google oft als Gegner der NSA-Überwachung aufgetreten.
Hinter den Kulissen arbeiten Google und andere Internet-Diensteanbieter offenbar enger mit dem US-Geheimdienst NSA zusammen, als es bislang den Anschein hatte. Das geht nach Ansicht von Al Jazeera aus zwei E-Mail-Wechseln hervor, deren Herausgabe man mit einem Informationsfreiheitsantrag (FOIA) erreicht habe. Darin geht es zwischen dem damaligen NSA-Chef Keith Alexander und Google-CTO Sergey Brin sowie Eric Schmidt (Executive Chairman von Google) um Terminabsprachen. Außerdem werden Hintergründe einer Kooperation angedeutet.

Wie aus einer Google-Suche eine Straftat wird
Ein französischer Aktivist fand mit Google Dokumente in einem ungesicherten Behördennetz und lud sie herunter. Dafür wurde er verurteilt – ein gefährlicher Präzedenzfall.
Im August 2012 führte der französische Aktivist Olivier Laurelli eine Google-Suche durch, die er später in seinem Blog als die "vermutlich teuerste in der bisherigen Geschichte Googles" bezeichnen sollte. Er hatte nach "Informationen zur aktuellen Situation in Syrien" gesucht und einen Link angeklickt, der ihn ins Extranet der französischen Behörde "Anses" führte (Agence nationale de securité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environment et et du travail, auf Deutsch: Nationale Behörde für Lebensmittel-, Umwelt- und Arbeitssicherheit). Ein Extranet ist die Erweiterung eines firmen- oder behördeneigenen Intranets, das nur für bestimmte externe Nutzer zugänglich ist – beziehungsweise sein sollte.

15 Jahre Google – 15 Google Meilensteine
Happy Birthday, Google – 15 Jahre wirst Du heute alt und hast in diesen eineinhalb Dekaden unser aller Welt verändert, egal ob man Dich nun mag oder nicht. Wir gratulieren und schauen anlässlich des Jubiläums auf 15 Meilensteine des Unternehmens.
Wenn man sich durch die Geschichte des Unternehmens ackert, wird einem – mir erging es zumindest so – erst einmal klar, was die Jungs seid ihrer Gründung auf die Beine gestellt haben und wie viele Dienste und Angebote man an den Start gebracht hat, von denen nicht wenige auch heute noch elementar wichtig für Milliarden Menschen sind. So mag es auch sein, dass bei der Auswahl von 15 Meilensteinen jeder vielleicht andere 15 ausgewählt hätte – hier ist unsere Wahl:
