Toyota Announces Segway Killer: The Winglet Personal Transporter

Only a year after taking control of Sony's robotics business, Toyota has come up with a vertical, mechanized scooter (or personal transporter, in future-speak) intended to help people move about in public areas.

Called the Winglet because of its fleet nature, it is the first gadget to duplicate the celebrated, and often mocked, navigation system of Dean Kamen's Segway Transporter: self-balancing through gyroscopic sensors detecting the gentle directional tilts of a rider.

Segways to invade Netherlands

Opressed Dutch Segway enthusiasts have seen the light at the end of their winter anguish, with the Dutch transport ministry promising to review its ban on their use in the flat-as-a-pancake arcadia.

A November ruling classified the walk-shy devices as motor scooters, which meant their use on public roads was banned from 1 January because they lack a proper, sorry, conventional brake. Segwayists instead lean back to slow down.

Dutch clamps down on Segways

Dutch police have banned Segways from all "public roads, bike paths and walkways", AP reports.

The ban, which came into force on New Year's Day, was provoked by the country's Royal Traffic Agency's classification of the Segway as a moped and its refusal to approve the vehicle due to its lack of a brake.
