EU Delays Launch of Passports for Pets
Owners will be able to take their cats, dogs and ferrets on holiday abroad this summer even if they do not have a pet passport as required under EU law, the European Commission said Wednesday.
From July 3, animal owners were supposed to carry a pet passport when crossing European Union borders, replacing a veterinary certificate that showed the animal had been vaccinated against rabies.

First Janet Jackson, Now Nipple Video Banned
Four months after Janet Jackson outraged the United States by bearing her breast on TV, Ireland has banned a video to encourage voting in next month's European elections because it shows a bare nipple.
In Britain, where bare breasts are shown daily in tabloid newspapers, the film will be shown in censored form. The breast-feeding sequence survives but shots of the offending nipple have been edited out.
The 45-second film was produced by the European Parliament's audio-visual department and shows a suckling baby trying to decide which of its mother's breasts to feed from.

Commissioner's pet project will see ferrets get passports
European dogs, cats and ferrets are to receive passports next year, allowing them to scamper freely across borders within most of the European Union.
The documents will have a blue cover, embossed with the yellow stars of the EU, and will contain a photograph of the pet and a code corresponding to its tattoo or microchip that will guarantee that it is free of rabies.

Biometrics - the EU takes another step down the road to 1984
- biometric documents for visas and resident third country nationals to be introduced by 2005
- biometric passports/documents for EU citizens to follow
- "compulsory" fingerprints and facial images
- data and personal information to be held on national and EU-wide databases
- admission that powers of data protection authorities cannot cope
- no guarantees that data will not be made available to non-EU states (eg: USA)
The European Commission has produced two draft Regulations (25.9.03) to introduce two sets of biometric data (fingerprints and facial image) on visas and resident permits for third country nationals by 2005. The biometric data and personal details on visas will be stored on national and EU-wide databases and be accessible through the Visa Information System (VIS) held on the Schengen Information System (SIS II).

Germany: A Tax Hell
Why do Russians Want to Join the European Union?
The tax burden on the population in Germany makes up 50-60%. Only very rich people manage to avoid paying taxes. All other people have to pay all of it. Inheritance taxes fall under a complicated classification. They require a payment from seven to fifty percent of an inherited sum. Yet, the law stipulates tax free minimums in case of inheritance. For instance, about 500 thousand euros are paid to a husband or wife whose spouse died, about 250 thousand euros are be paid to children, and between five and fifteen thousand euros are paid to other relatives. Calculations show that if an individual inherits 25 million euros, the state will take almost a half of it.

EU - Cows Can Fly Upper Class On Common Agricultural Fare
A new report calculates that the European Union spends enough money each year on farmers to pay for a round the world trip for all 21 million European cows, the Guardian reports. Aid campaigners estimate that, thanks to the generosity of Europe's taxpayers, the cows could touch down in London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Hanoi, Siem Reap, Brisbane, Raratonga, Los Angeles and San Francisco and still have enough left over for £400 spending money each.
