Irish becomes the 23rd official language of EU
The Irish language has been given official status in Europe, taking its place as the 23rd language of the European Union. The move yesterday received curiously little attention in the Republic of Ireland, given that the language has at times been regarded as a semi-mystical part of the national identity.

EU lab tests chocolate, toast and now, molecules

Here, at the European Union's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements chocolate is just one of the things for which scientists have created accurate samples.

Turning a dull vote into hot copy
Polling stations are in action across the EU for elections to the European parliament - that all important body behind legislation ranging from the length of Europeans' working day to the curvature of fruit. But however integral to the lives of Europeans as the parliament may be - there is little doubt that the election campaign elicits more ennui than enthusiasm among voters.

You Know You Have Been In Finland Too Long, When...
This old chestnut has been doing the rounds of the Net for some time and in places it is showing its age. We have taken the liberty of adding a few glosses (for which we asked a furriner who's been here over 20 years and is therefore probably guilty of most of the behaviour being lampooned).
