Drone hacking is becoming Child’s Play

You know what really strikes me about a lot of the drone hacks we’ve seen lately? It just get too easy. I mean we’re seeing a huge number of new attacks published at every security conference. Last RSA Conference a security researcher reported finding a way to hijack a high-end drone, using parts costing as little as $40. The expert says it is possible to start the octocopter’s engines, engage auto-takeoff, control its camera and, potentially, crash the machine. The high end drone manufacturer or model was not disclosed, but it cost about $18000 and is in use by police departments all around the world.

DJI is opening an indoor drone arena for first-time fliers and professionals alike

Dronemaker DJI has already opened physical stores in China and South Korea, but now it's expanding its consumer outreach with its first ever 'drone arena.' The 1,395-square-meter arena will open later this month in Yongin, a city in the south of Seoul's greater metropolitan area. DJI says the indoor venue will be kitted out with safety nets, an LED-light circuit for advanced pilots, and support for first-person-view flying. There'll also be a small workshop for carrying out minor repairs.

The world's fastest consumer drone can record 4K video at 85 miles per hour

George Matus was 11 years old when he flew his first drone. "I was immediately hooked," the young man tells me with a grin. By age 16 he was competing as a professional drone racer and acting as a test pilot for new aircraft. Now 18, he recently finished high school but decided to defer college, opting instead to pursue a fellowship offer from tech billionaire Peter Thiel. He used that money to start his own company, Teal, which today is launching its first product, a consumer facing drone that a beginner can easily fly with an iPhone to capture 4K video. The difference between Teal's first drone and the competition is that this unit can also perform like a racecar, reaching speeds of 85 miles per hour while flipping, diving, and performing barrel rolls.

This drone can detect and detonate land mines

The creators of a drone that can autonomously map, detect, and detonate land mines say their technology could potentially clear the world of these deadly devices in the less than 10 years' time. It's an ambitious goal, but one well worth pursuing. Worldwide, there are thought to be some 100 million land mines, many of which are leftover from conflicts long since finished. Every year these mines kill thousands of people, the vast majority of which are innocent civilians. The Mine Kafon Drone (MKD) wants to help change this.

Initiative to legalize marijuana heading for Arizona vote

PHOENIX - Advocates for legalizing marijuana in Arizona filed 260,000 petition signatures Thursday with the secretary of state. That total is at least 100,000 more than is needed to qualify for a statewide vote in November.

The Arizona marijuana initiative -- officially known as the "Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act" -- would treat pot much the same way as alcohol.

Intel Edison-Powered Nixie Wearable Drone Camera Flies Off Your Wrist To Capture The Moment

There are very few products that have genuinely made me go "wow", but I can safely add the Nixie drone camera to that modest list. Over the past couple of years, drones have become popular enough to the point where a new release doesn't excite most people. But Nixie is different. It's a drone that you wear, like a bracelet. Whenever you want to let it soar, you give it a command to unwrap, power-up, and let it go...

Drohnengesetz in Österreich

Also, los gehts:

US Military Drones Migrating To Linux

Raytheon is switching its UAV control system from Solaris to Linux for U.S. military drones, starting with a Northrop Grumman MQ-8C Fire Scout helicopter. Earlier this month Raytheon entered into a $15.8 million contract with the U.S. Navy to upgrade Raytheon's control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), according to a recent Avionics Intelligence report. The overhaul is designed to implement more modern controls to help ground-based personnel control UAVs.
