Insight from Davos: How Global Thought Leaders Talk About Innovation

The Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, or Davos, rounds out its last full day of sessions today in Davos, Switzerland. For the last three days, 2,500 of the world’s leaders convened to discuss global poverty, political upheaval, climate change and whatever else keeps them up at night.

Advancement is the unspoken focus of this group, which is “committed to improving the state of the world.” The word “innovation” actually appears 35 times in the 100-page agenda. Compare that to 14 mentions of “governance,” 24 mentions of “war,” and five mentions of “poverty.” ”Innovation” even beats out “political,” appearing 33 times. (These all pale in comparison to the 76 mentions of “economic,” but who’s counting?)

Davos man weighs future of capitalism

The Occupy movement, which went global after protests against Wall Street last year, is camping in igloos to bring its argument with the super-rich "1 percent" to Davos.

It is a reminder to the leaders of finance and industry at the World Economic Forum of the resentment that is leading to questions about the future direction of capitalism.

Annual Meeting 2012 25 - 29 January - Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

The contextual change at the top of minds remains the rebalancing and deleveraging that is reshaping the global economy. In the near term, this transformation is seen in the context of how developed countries will deleverage without falling back into recession and how emerging countries will curb inflation and avoid future economic bubbles. In the long term, both will play out as the population of our interdependent world not only passes 7 billion but is also interconnected through information technology on a historic scale. The net result will be transformational changes in social values, resource needs and technological advances as never before. In either context, the necessary conceptual models do not exist from which to develop a systemic understanding of the great transformations taking place now and in the future.

WikiLeaks founder not on the Davos guest list

World Economic Forum (Wef) President Klaus Schwab said he would invite embattled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to Davos if he could, but he can’t.

“It’s our policy not to invite anyone who is currently the object of a legal complaint,” Schwab said in an interview with the SonntagsZeitung newspaper.

He said the forum, which takes place every January in the Swiss resort of Davos, would still discuss WikiLeaks, the group behind a mass-leak of confidential United States embassy cables that has embarrassed Washington.
