Federal rules allow local law enforcement agencies to seize drug money headed south to Mexico. Millions of dollars are at stake. The system has strengths but critics say there's too little oversight of how the money is spent.

UN shock at Colombia coca rise
Colombia's cultivation of coca, the raw material for cocaine, jumped last year by 27%, a United Nations report says.
The UN's office on drugs and crime (UNODC) says the increase is "a surprise and a shock" given Colombia's efforts to destroy coca crops.

Die Sängerin war Montagnachmittag in ihrer Wohnung zusammengebrochen und wäre fast eine Treppe heruntergestürzt. Vater Mitch fuhr sie darauf in seinem Taxi sofort in die nächste Klinik. Ein Vertrauter der Sängerin sagte dem Blatt: "Sie bleibt erstmal da. Die Tests waren ohne Ergebnis und man weiß noch nicht, was genau passiert ist."

Mit Kiffkammern gegen das Rauchverbot
Am 1. Juli tritt auch in den Niederlanden das Rauchverbot in Gaststätten in Kraft. Ein Problem für die Coffee-Shops. Doch die Besitzer wissen sich zu helfen. Einige richten extra Raucherräume ein, andere setzten einfach auf neue Konsumformen für Cannabis. Denn auch wenn rauchen verboten ist – kiffen ist es nicht.

Don Duncan says he is not a pot smoker. "I haven't in eight or nine years now," says Duncan, 37. "It wasn't the right thing for me." Which is ironic, since he spends most of his day around plenty of cannabis as part owner of a West Hollywood, Calif. dispensary of medical marijuana, a storefront operation where as many as 100 customers — Duncan is careful to call them patients — line up daily with letters from their doctors to procure products with names like L.A. Confidential and Purple Urkel.

Open Source Psychedelia
Beginning as a Facebook group, Jason Semenuik and Fernando Paternostro have started Project Sunspot, an online petition seeking to ensure public involvement in psychedelic research and education. Their objective is to start by creating a database of those interested in this mission, ideally leading to greater efforts and added understanding.

Kolumbien: Sieben Tonnen Kokain beschlagnahmt
Die beschlagnahmten Drogen hätten zwei Schmugglern gehört, die für das Drogenkartell Norte del Valle arbeiteten. Die Anführer dieses Kartells sind entweder getötet worden oder sitzen in Haft. Seit dem 5. Juni waren nach Angaben der Polizei in der Urwaldregion am Pazifik 70 geheime Lager zur Herstellung von Kokain und große Mengen Chemikalien vernichtet worden.

Seit der französische Präsident Nicolas Sarkozy die Sängerin Carla Bruni geheiratet hat, gehen Politik und Showbusiness in Frankreich Hand in Hand. Jetzt sorgt ein neues Liebeslied der First Lady sogar für außenpolitische Irritationen.
Der kolumbianische Außenminister Fernando Araújo ist verärgert. Bei der Liedzeile "Deine Liebe ist gefährlicher als kolumbianisches Kokain" denkt er keineswegs an leidenschaftliche Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse in einer Liebesbeziehung, sondern sehr konkret an die gesellschaftlichen Probleme im eigenen Land.

AMY WINEHOUSE: Dealerpärchen festgenommen
Amy Winehouse ist mal wieder mit der Polizei in Kontakt. In diesem Fall aber wahrscheinlich nur als Zeugin. Der Grund: Die Polizei nahm zwei Dealer fest, die Drogen an Amy Winehouse verkauft haben sollen. Wie die britische Zeitung “The Sun” berichtet, sollen die beiden Dealer mit Kokain und Ecstasy gedealt haben.

In July, the Dutch government will introduce a nationwide smoking ban in bars, cafes and restaurants, aimed at protecting workers. But it will also make life a lot harder for the country's infamous coffee shops, where customers will only be allowed to smoke pure cannabis.
