US claims Afghan opium progress
Opium production in Afghanistan will fall by almost a third this year, according to a US government report.
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy report estimates opium production will plunge by 31% to 5,500 tonnes compared to 8,000 in 2007.

10,5 Tonnen Kokain in Kolumbien beschlagnahmt
Die kolumbianische Polizei hat in der kolumbianischen Hafenstadt Barranquilla 10,5 Tonnen Kokain mit einem Straßenverkaufswert von etwa 800 Millionen Euro beschlagnahmt. Die Drogen seien auf Lastwagen in Kisten mit Plastikprodukten versteckt gewesen und sollten auf ein Frachtschiff nach Mexiko verladen werden, teilte die Polizei am Samstag weiter mit.

An elephant once addicted to heroin-laced bananas has kicked the habit - but in the process become unfit for the wild.
The four-year-old bull elephant, referred to alternately as "Big Brother" or "Xiguang", went through a lengthy rehab course.

Police in Mexico find private zoo as drug cartel's party house
Police have smashed a major drugs ring in Mexico City seizing weapons, vehicles - and lions.
Eleven Colombians, a US citizen, two Mexicans and an Uruguayan were detained during a raid on a sprawling mansion on Saturday, prosecutor Marisela Morales told a news conference.

Einmal Kokain - immer Kokain, einmal 4 kg - nicht immer 4 kg?
In einem heute ins Netz gestellten Urteil (BGer 6B_361/2008 vom 09.10.2008) hält es das Bundesgericht für erwiesen, dass die Beschwerdeführerein durch eine Drogenkurierein mehrfach Kokain in die Schweiz einführen liess. Da zwei Lieferungen offenbar nicht sichergestellt werden konnten, war die Beschwerdeführerin aufgrund von Schätzungen der entsprechenden Drogenmengen verurteilt worden.

Scientists discover Stone Age drug paraphernalia
They found ceramic bowls, as well as tubes for inhaling drug fumes or powders, which appear to have originated in South America between 100BC and 400BC and were then carried 400 miles to the islands.
While the use of such paraphernalia for inhaling drugs is well-known, the age of the bowls has thrown new light on how long humans have been taking drugs.

Mexico's president wants to decriminalize pot, cocaine and heroin possession
Even on his most homicidal of days, Al Pacino's character in Scarface couldn't even approach the level of drug trafficking-related brutality bleeding down Mexico's streets. It is no longer unusual for the Mexican news media to report on yet another, freshly decapitated head stuck atop a fencepost or a metal spike, or a garbage bag filled with body parts, usually with a hand-scrawled note or placard attached. That amounts to a cartel's calling card, and it's usually delivered in the form of a warning to a rival cartel, or for the Mexican authorities to stay away and stop seizing their drugs.
