Is Marijuana Prohibition America’s ‘Berlin Wall’?

It is said that almost everyone in the marijuana law reform movement has a seminal moment they can point to when their public activism started. My moment was in the fall, six years ago.

I’m a past president of our local Kiwanis Club. I’ve been a member for years; we meet for breakfast at 6:30am, every Wednesday morning. My fateful “activism moment” was meeting face-to-face with one morning’s Kiwanis Club program, our town’s newly acquired dope dog. Some rock-ribbed citizen had left money in his will for the city to buy a dope dog for our town of 3,000, in a county of 18,000 people. The dog’s handler and the police chief were up at the speaker’s table. I had to fight back the urge to turn around and run.

Everybody must get stoned

A new plan to legalize marijuana in California would create a $1 billion tokin' tax and thousands of green jobs. Now that's a stimulus plan!

Can Californians help dig themselves out of their historic fiscal crisis by getting high? Tom Ammiano thinks so, and he isn't smoking a thing.

State bill would decriminalize possession of less than an ounce of marijuana

John Carusello has sold pipes and related products for 30 years at his Lakewood Road shop, and he would love to see his customers put those products to use without fear of jail.

"We sell everything for tobacco," Carusello said, carefully, from behind a counter stocked with glass pipes in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. What goes in those pipes when the customers go home, Carusello said, is not his business. "We don't ask."

Holder may end federal raids on medical marijuana clubs - video

Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters that he will keep President Obama’s campaign promised with regards to medical marijuana. “What the president said during the campaign, you’ll be surprised to know, will be consistent with what we’ll be doing in law enforcement. He was my boss during the campaign. He is formally and technically and by law my boss now. What he said during the campaign is now American policy,” said Holder

Calif. lawmaker proposes legalizing marijuana

A California legislator today proposed making the state the first to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

The legislation, by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a Democrat from San Francisco, would allow people 21 and older to grow, buy, sell and possess pot. It would be sold, regulated and taxed similar to alcohol. The state would collect $50 an ounce from sellers, and growers, too, would be taxed.

He estimates that the cash-strapped state could reap more than $1 billion a year.
