DEA - Microgram
The DEA's Office of Forensic Sciences publishes a monthly newsletter called the Microgram Bulletin, which features news and photos about unusual drugs and drug smuggling techniques.
I like reading the newsletter for two reasons: first, it's filled with examples of human ingenuity (the August, 2008 issue has photos of fake kidney bean made to smuggle heroin). Second, it's mind-boggling to see the weird drugs that people like to take: Butanediol? Nandralone? Boldenone? Trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine? Sceletium tortuosum? N,N-dimethylamphetamine? Testosterone cypionate? Bromo-Benzodifuranyl-Isopropylamine Hydrochloride? I've never heard of thse. Apparently, the world is filled with connoisseurs of esoteric inebrients!

Generic vaporizers offer Volcano-class features for half the price
For years the Storz & Bickel Volcano Vaporizer has been the gold standard in smoking accouterments, but at $670 for the "Digit" model, it's for connoisseurs (or well-heeled dealers) only. Even the "Classic" is over $500.

Drug Museum
Forget the priceless works of art in the Guggenheim or MoMA. Leave the fossils and cavemen to the American Museum of Natural History. Even the anal beads in the Museum of Sex have nothing on this place. I'm talking about the Drug Museum in Mexico City.

Coffee Shop Trial a Test for Dutch Drug Policies
The Dutch have long been known for their liberal drug policies. Recently, though, cities and prosecutors have been cracking down on the so-called "coffee shops" that sell marijuana. In one potentially precedent-setting case, laws against organized crime are being used in an effort to convict a shop owner.
Law enforcement officials in the Netherlands are seeking to prosecute the owners and employees of one of the country's largest "coffee shops" in a case that could have a huge impact on drug policies in the country.

Harvard Scientists Build a Device to Smoke Weed During Brain Scan
Smoking during a brain scan is not easy. Why would you want to? Because functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows researchers to observe activity in the brain, and doing so while smoking tobacco or pot could enhance our understanding of addiction and how to treat it.

Can Marijuana Help Rescue California's Economy?
Could marijuana be the answer to the economic misery facing California? Democratic state assemblyman Tom Ammiano thinks so. Ammiano introduced legislation last month that would legalize pot and allow the state to regulate and tax its sale — a move that could mean billions of dollars for the cash-strapped state. Pot is, after all, California's biggest cash crop, responsible for $14 billion a year in sales, dwarfing the state's second largest agricultural commodity — milk and cream — which brings in $7.3 billion a year, according to the most recent USDA statistics. The state's tax collectors estimate the bill would bring in about $1.3 billion a year in much needed revenue, offsetting some of the billions of dollars in service cuts and spending reductions outlined in the recently approved state budget.

Mexican Drug Lord Joined Forbes’ List of World’s Billionaires
What do software mogul Bill Gates and banking investor Warren Buffett have in common with wanted Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera?
They are all featured in Forbes magazine's world's billionaires report as "self-made" billionaires.
Guzman Loera, whose nickname means Shorty, escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001. He heads the powerful Sinaloa cartel, investigators say. Authorities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border blame the Sinaloa and other cartels for a surge in violence in the region.

Police seize 1,200 pounds of pot in spinach cans
Police with the New Mexico Motor Transportation Division found 1,200 pounds of pot packed in cans labeled as spinach during a stop at the Gallup port of entry. An inspector noticed that only a few of the cans were labeled and that the weight printed on the side of the can didn't match the actual weight. A closer look during last Friday's bust revealed the canned drugs, which were worth an estimated $1.5 million.
