High hopes for new pot laws
California led the nation in allowing marijuana to be used for medical purposes, but last month residents of Los Angeles said enough is enough.
Tired of a proliferation of lightly regulated marijuana dispensaries that made pot available to any "patient," voters approved a measure to drastically scale back the number of shops allowed -- to 135 from 805.
In Colorado, state officials had trouble keeping up with -- and collecting taxes from -- many of the 1,000-plus marijuana farms, while people who were not sick easily obtained pot registration cards. The widespread availability of medical cannabis accelerated the movement toward full legalization of the iconic weed, which was approved last year.

The UK Government bans khat, ignores advice of its own experts
The UK government has today announced it will go against the recommendations of its own drugs experts (again) and ban khat, a plant mostly used by the UK’s Somali and Yemeni communities, that produces a mild stimulant effect when chewed.
Earlier this year, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, the body responsible for providing the government with expert advice on drugs, produced a detailed review of the evidence (PDF) on the social and health harms of khat and offered recommendations on responses to the drug in the UK.

Colorado will fly 100% hemp American flag over the Capitol this 4th of July
The flag flying over the Capitol building on the Fourth of July might look like your typical Old Glory. But you probably won’t notice the fibers that make it special. It’s believed to be the first hemp flag to flutter over the dome since the government began outlawing marijuana’s less-recreational cousin back in the 1930s.
Colorado hemp advocate Michael Bowman is the man responsible for getting the flag, made from Colorado-raised hemp and screen-printed with the stars and stripes, up there.

Marijuana hits mainstream, perceptions change
It took 50 years for American attitudes about marijuana to zigzag from the paranoia of "Reefer Madness" to the excesses of Woodstock back to the hard line of "Just Say No."
The next 25 years took the nation from Bill Clinton, who famously "didn't inhale," to Barack Obama, who most emphatically did.
Now, in just a few short years, public opinion has moved so dramatically toward general acceptance that even those who champion legalization are surprised at how quickly attitudes are changing and states are moving to approve the drug — for medical use and just for fun.

Cannabispatienten belagern Bundesopiumstelle

Marijuana Legislation: How Legal Is Cannabis Consumption In Each US State?
Medical marijuana use is currently legal in 18 states and Washington, DC, and six more states seem to be following suit. However, the market for legally produced and distributed marijuana is largely untapped, and is expected to explode into a multimillion dollar industry, especially after more states make the move to legalize the drug.
And that’s what entrepreneurs and investors came together to discuss at at the ArcView Group’s quarterly forum on Friday.
Though potentially lucrative, the legal marijuana industry cannot truly mature before laws favoring the responsible distribution of marijuana are passed on local, state and federal levels.
Here is an interactive map that charts out where every American state currently stands on the marijuana use. Click on any state for details. Refer to the key provided below the map.
