Steinbrück to Students: Pot Should Be Decriminalized
Peer Steinbrück, the center-left Social Democratic Party's (SPD) candidate for chancellor, went all out to appeal to young voters with a recent visit to a student flatshare in Kreuzberg, a trendy district in the German capital. Not only did the party leave 48 bottles of beer in its wake, Steinbrück made an unexpected comment.
According to the daily B.Z. newspaper on Tuesday, no topic was off limits. Apparently, the student schmooze saw a jovial Steinbrück pull out the stops in an attempt to mobilize young voters -- by advocating the decriminalization of cannabis.

Zuerst geschieht gar nichts. Da ist nur ein grelles Flackern. Dann entstehen Farben.

BUSTED: Over 70% of All Major US Drug Seizures Are Marijuana Related
A new study has found that over 70% of recent seizures of illicit drugs in the United States are marijuana related, painting a picture of the American drug landscape and a mis-prioritized, failed, war on drugs.
The study, “Busted: Analyzing America’s Most Recent Drug Hauls,” looked at major drug seizures as reported by over 1,500 media outlets in the United States during a 13 month period from March 2012 – April 2013.
The study found that of the 5,000 most recent drug busts reported in the news, 70.5% involved marijuana — 140% more than all cocaine (13%), heroin (10%) and methamphetamine (6%) busts combined. The study did not look at prescription medication abuse or other designer drugs, only the “big four,” which together account for 69% of the seized drugs analyzed by American forensic labs each year.

Hundreds of Marijuana Plants Sprout in German City
The German university city of Göttingen is being taken over by marijuana plants. Behind the phenomenon is a group of pro-pot activists who planted seeds around town to stir debate over the plant's illegal status. City authorities are not amused.
The university town of Göttingen is getting greener and greener. But not everyone is pleased: The new plants sprouting up in parks, planter boxes and gardens across the city aren't part of an official city beautification project. They're part of a pro-marijuana protest.
In early June, a group calling itself "A Few Autonomous Flower Children" spread several kilograms of marijuana seeds through the city. Only now are the fruits of their labor beginning to emerge from the soil. "We can't set eyes on this useful and beautiful plant because it's absolutely forbidden in Germany to grow it," the group wrote in a letter claiming responsibility for the action. And they say that's not right.

Pot advocate Marc Emery approved for return to Canada
The wife of Canada's so-called Prince of Pot says the U.S. government has agreed to transfer her imprisoned husband back home, but Canada's government still needs to give its approval.
A July 9 letter from the U.S. Department of Justice obtained by The Canadian Press said Marc Emery's transfer has now been approved.
Emery's wife, Jodie, said she was informed of the decision by email Wednesday afternoon, about 30 minutes after talking to her husband who is completing a five-year prison sentence at medium-security prison in Yazoo City, Miss. for selling cannabis seeds to U.S. customers over the Internet.
