DEA Program "More Troubling" Than NSA
Reuters is reporting on a secret effort by the Drug Enforcement Agency to collect data from wiretaps, informants, and other sources. Considered most troubling is a systematic campaign to hide this program from the courts, denying defendants their right to know how evidence against them was obtained. This agenda targets U.S. citizens directly, as it is mainly focused on drug trafficking. From the article: 'Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.

Special Operations Division der DEA: Big Data im Kampf gegen Drogen
In einem Exklusivreport berichtete die Nachrichtenagentur Reuters heute über die ‘besondere’ Nutzung von Geheimdienstinformationen der Special Operations Division (SOD) der US Amerikanischen Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Die Mitarbeiter der SOD setzen sich aus zwei Dutzend unterschiedlichen Behörden zusammen, u.a. NSA, FBI, CIA und Homeland Security. Die SOD versorgt die DEA-Mitarbeiter mit Informationen aus Abhöraktionen der NSA im Ausland, Informationen von ausländischen Informanten und Hinweise aus der hauseigenen DICE Datenbank, die Metadaten zu Internet- und Mobiltelefonkommunikation aus alten DEA-Ermittlungsverfahren enthält – etwa 1 Milliarde Datensätze.

'New-pot in bloom': Cannabis plants found growing in Newport Council flower pots
It was high time gardeners did some weeding when cannabis was found in council flower pots.
About 20 plants could be seen sprouting from among flowers in six separate boxes in Newport city centre – passed by thousands of motorists every day and half a mile from the city’s main police station.

Neue Cannabis-Fibel: Lieber druff als Suff
Ein neues Marihuana-Buch will die Ehre der uralten Nutzpflanze retten. Mit guten Argumenten erklärt der Autor, warum das jetzige Verbot großer Unsinn ist. Und auch, wer es angezettelt hat: ein Ex-Alkoholfahnder aus Amerika, der einfach Schauermärchen aus der Boulevardpresse übernahm.
Dass Drogen eine schlimme Sache sind, beweist das alljährliche Kalangiwurzelfest in der Westafrikanischen Republik. Es kommt "zu Hunderten von Vergewaltigungen, sexuelle Belästigungen sind an der Tagesordnung. Viele Besucher enden in Notaufnahmen". So berichtet es Schriftsteller und Fotograf Sebastián Marincolo. Doch damit längst nicht genug.

Uruguay: Parlament stimmt für Legalisierung von Marihuana
In Uruguays Apotheken soll künftig Marihuana angeboten werden, Konsumenten können bis zu 40 Gramm monatlich kaufen. Die linke Regierung treibt das Projekt voran, das Parlament hat sich nun für die Legalisierung ausgesprochen. Nicht alle Uruguayer sind begeistert.
Montevideo - In Lateinamerika wird heftig über die Legalisierung von Marihuana gestritten. Einige Experten sind der Meinung, dass die Drogenkartelle so besser bekämpft werden können - indem der Mafia eine Einnahmequelle entzogen wird. Selbst Papst Franziskus thematisierte die Legalisierung von Rauschmitteln bei seiner Brasilien-Reise, sprach sich aber dagegen aus.

Uruguay votes to create world's first national legal marijuana market
Uruguay's unprecedented plan to create a legal marijuana market has taken its critical first step in the lower house of Congress.
All 50 members of the ruling Broad Front coalition approved the proposal just before midnight on Wednesday in a party line vote, keeping a narrow majority of the 96 MPs present after more than 13 hours of passionate debate.

Uruguay to vote on marijuana legalisation bill
Uruguay's House of Representative is preparing to vote on a bill to legalise marijuana on Wednesday.
If passed by the House and the Senate, Uruguay will become the first country to legally regulate the production, distribution and sale of marijuana.
The law is backed by the government of President Jose Mujica, which says it will remove profits from drug dealers and divert users from harder drugs.
Under the bill, only the government would be allowed to sell marijuana.

Steinbrück to Students: Pot Should Be Decriminalized
Peer Steinbrück, the center-left Social Democratic Party's (SPD) candidate for chancellor, went all out to appeal to young voters with a recent visit to a student flatshare in Kreuzberg, a trendy district in the German capital. Not only did the party leave 48 bottles of beer in its wake, Steinbrück made an unexpected comment.
According to the daily B.Z. newspaper on Tuesday, no topic was off limits. Apparently, the student schmooze saw a jovial Steinbrück pull out the stops in an attempt to mobilize young voters -- by advocating the decriminalization of cannabis.

Gibt es den Drogenrausch ohne Drogen? Eine Flackerlampe soll Zustände wie bei einem LSD-Trip oder einer Nahtoderfahrung auslösen. Ein Münchner Design-Professor will seine Studenten mit der Maschine zu kreativen Höchstleistungen treiben.
Zuerst geschieht gar nichts. Da ist nur ein grelles Flackern. Dann entstehen Farben. Eine kobaltblaue Fläche erstrahlt, sie wird grau. Rote Sterne schießen aus ihr hervor, dann schlägt die Fläche Wellen, verwandelt sich in einen Teich. Wie aus dem Nichts greift ein Gefühl klaustrophobischer Enge zu und löst einen starken Fluchtreflex aus, der urplötzlich wieder verschwindet, vertrieben vom Empfinden unendlicher Weite und Einsamkeit.

15- und 17-Jährige bauen in Baumhaus Marihuana an
Am Freitag Nachmittag meldete ein Spaziergänger der Polizeiinspektion Kempten, dass dieser in einem angrenzenden Waldstück bei Kempten in einem Baumhaus evtl. Marihuanapflanzen festgestellt habe.
Bei der anschließenden Nachschau konnten tatsächlich zwei kleine angesetzte Pflänzchen vorgefunden und die drei dazugehörigen jugendlichen Botaniker im Alter zwischen 15 und 17 Jahren angetroffen werden.

BUSTED: Over 70% of All Major US Drug Seizures Are Marijuana Related
A new study has found that over 70% of recent seizures of illicit drugs in the United States are marijuana related, painting a picture of the American drug landscape and a mis-prioritized, failed, war on drugs.
The study, “Busted: Analyzing America’s Most Recent Drug Hauls,” looked at major drug seizures as reported by over 1,500 media outlets in the United States during a 13 month period from March 2012 – April 2013.
The study found that of the 5,000 most recent drug busts reported in the news, 70.5% involved marijuana — 140% more than all cocaine (13%), heroin (10%) and methamphetamine (6%) busts combined. The study did not look at prescription medication abuse or other designer drugs, only the “big four,” which together account for 69% of the seized drugs analyzed by American forensic labs each year.

Barrie Rainey in court over 'fake ecstasy' death in Alexandria
A 24-year-old man has appeared in court in connection with the death of a teenager who is thought to have taken a fake ecstasy tablet.
The 18-year-old woman died after taking the tablet in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, on Tuesday.
Barrie Rainey, from Alexandria, was charged under the misuse of drugs act at Dumbarton Sheriff Court.
