Ecstasy Produced for 'Riot Control' in South Africa
According to Reuters, on June 9 1998 a fomer South African government scientist told South Africa's Truth Commission that in the final days of apartheid the government ordered its chemists to make one tonne of ecstasy, for 'riot control'.

Massive post-war rise in production of Afghan opium
Britain is expected to be hit by a flood of heroin after a gigantic increase in the production of opium in Afghanistan, the United Nations will warn today. A UN survey estimates the farmers will grow 2,700 tons of opium this year compared with 185 tons in 2001, a 1,400 per cent jump.

Pot invasion stuns park officials
A new species is appearing more frequently in Sequoia National Park: marijuana. During the past month, park rangers and law enforcement officials have uprooted 19 marijuana gardens from the Mineral King and South Fork areas of the park. Officials disposed of more than 35,000 plants -- with an estimated street value of more than $140 million -- in an undisclosed Tulare County site.

The Partnership For A Drug Free America
isn't an organization I know terribly much about. I don't know if the organization has an office, a 'president,' or if it's just a tagword title tacked onto any specific group's anti-drug credo. What most people have seen from them are an assortment of creative commercial announcements over the years, exposing the evils of drug use.

A 17-year-old girl who ingested a hallucinogenic weed
commonly found in backwoods throughout the nation was found wandering the streets early Monday.
The girl, who was not identified, said she and a friend ate seeds from jimsonweed, which they found along a road after learning about the plant from the Internet. Her mother said police found her daughter around 4 a.m. wandering the street.
"I thought it would be safe because it's natural," the girl said Monday at Cresson Township police offices. "There aren't any chemicals or anything in it."

KFC Customer Gets Pot With Chicken
The customer who visited a KFC in this San Francisco suburb Friday got two bags of marijuana, instead of the extra biscuits he had ordered. He gave the pot back to the worker, got his biscuits and called police.

THE 2002 DOOBIE AWARD NOMINATIONS
The 3rd annual HIGH TIMES Doobie Awards for Conscious Music will be given out at BB King’s Blues Club in New York on September 25. Nominees in 13 categories will be on hand for the awards show.
Last year’s Doobies Awards show, scheduled for September 12, was canceled due to 9/11. The first Doobie Awards took place on September 6, 2000 at Wetlands in New York.
