Magic mushrooms may help treat depression: How?
Feeling blue? Two new studies suggest taking a trip might help - but we're not talking vacations.
Tripping on "magic mushrooms" appears to change the brain in ways similar to antidepressants, the study found.
"We're not saying go out there and eat magic mushrooms," Professor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacology researcher at Imperial College London and senior author of both studies, told Reuters. "But...this drug has such a fundamental impact on the brain that it's got to be meaningful - it's got to be telling us something about how the brain works."

Police visit hero's house to give him an award...and sniff out cannabis farm
TWO police officers arrested a man for growing cannabis - moments after telling him he had won an award from their chief constable.
Adrian Mailer, 33, was hand-picked to get a commendation from Tayside Police boss Justine Curran for giving first aid to a nine-year-old boy who was injured in an accident.
But when officers went to his home to deliver the good news, they caught a whiff of Mailer's dope farm and arrested him.

Polish lawmaker smokes ‘marijuana’ in parliament
Janusz Palikot, the leader of a new party which brought in Poland’s first trans-gender and openly gay MPs, launched a drive Friday to legalise marijuana by smoking pot in parliament.
“This is the weed,” he told reporters in his office in the lower house of parliament, lighting up a large incense joint containing what he said was a legal quantity of marijuana.
Palikot said his party had submitted a bill to legalise marijuana.
Earlier on Friday, the philosophy graduate known for his flamboyant political stunts, caused a stir when he announced he would “light up” in parliament.

Liberal Plan to Legalize Pot Would Generate Millions
A Liberal resolution to legalize marijuana at the party's recent policy convention is getting high praise from a number of pro-pot groups, who say the move could make millions of dollars for Ottawa.
Samuel Lavoie, president of the Liberal youth wing, said that coming out in support of marijuana was an intentionally bold move to push discussion forward on the issue.
"We were expanding the debate," Lavoie told CTV's Power Play in Ottawa on Monday.

Mexican navy seizes huge haul of precursor chemicals
The Mexican navy says it has seized 195 tonnes of chemicals which can be used to make the drug methamphetamine.
The navy found 12 shipping containers full of the precursor chemical in the Pacific coast port of Lazaro Cardenas.

Führerschein: Pauschaler Drogenverdacht unzulässig
Wenn es um mögliche Drogensünder am Steuer geht, holen Führerscheinbehörden gern zum Rundumschlag aus. Um ein ärztliches Gutachten kommt der Betroffene sowieso nicht herum. Deshalb wird oft gern pauschal danach gefragt, ob die Gefahr besteht, dass der Autofahrer künftig wieder unter Drogeneinfluss fährt. Dieser weitgehende Gutachtenauftrag kann bei Cannabiskonsumenten rechtswidrig sein, stellt das Verwaltungsgericht Neustadt in einem aktuellen Beschluss fest.

Der DHV dokumentiert Fälle staatlicher Verfolgung von Hanffreunden. In diesem Fall beschreibt Ciro P. wie aus einem Streit unter Nachbarn ein dreiwöchiger Gefängnisaufenthalt wurde.
Ciro P. aus Baden-Württemberg wurde von seiner Nachbarin bei der Polizei angeschwärzt. Nach einem Jahr Observation rückte die Polizei mit 6-7 Mann und Hunden an und führte eine Hausdurchsuchung durch. Der vermeintliche Grow-Raum entpuppte sich als Kinderzimmer. Gefunden wurden 4 g Cannabis und Bilder einer Pflanze, deren Anbau schon einige Jahr her war. Vor Gericht wurde Ciro erst zu 90, dann zu 60 und schlussendlich zu 45 Tagessätzen verurteilt. Der Staatsanwalt verlangte aufgrund der Nichteinsicht seiner Schuld ein möglichst hartes Urteil.

Marijuana dropped from Marin smoking ban
Marin's war on smoking was blunted Tuesday as a measure cracking down on tobacco and other "weed" was sent back for revision to make clear the crackdown does not include marijuana.
Although supervisors were in agreement with the policy when county staff last month asserted an ordinance outlawing smoking in unincorporated-area apartments included marijuana and other herbs as well as tobacco, the county board Tuesday abruptly called for revisions making clear tobacco was the only weed at issue.

Marijuana study a boost for supporters - Exposure to Marijuana Smoke Does Not Effect Lungs
A new UCSF study on the effects of marijuana smoke should relieve one of the primary concerns about its medical use. The study of 5,115 men and women over two decades concluded that marijuana smokers did not suffer the level of lung damage experienced by tobacco smokers.
Of course, this finding came with more than a few caveats. Perhaps the biggest one is that marijuana users tend to smoke far less frequently than cigarette smokers.

Moderater Konsum von Cannabis hat einer Studie zufolge keine negativen Auswirkungen auf die Lungenfunktion. Eine nun veröffentlichte Langzeitstudie in den USA hat ergeben, dass das tägliche Rauchen eines Joints über einen Zeitraum von sieben Jahren die Lungenfunktion nicht nachteilig beeinflusst. Im Gegenteil erhöhe der gelegentliche Konsum von Marihuana das Lungenvolumen sogar leicht, sagte Stefan Kertesz, einer der Autoren der Studie aus dem "Journal of the American Medical Association". Dieser Effekt sei allerdings so gering, dass er für die Betroffenen kaum spürbar sei, so Kertesz.
