Joshua Bearman (who wrote the "Argo" story for Wired that was turned into a terrific movie) has a story in the July 2013 issue of GQ called "Coronado High." Josh told me, "The story is an epic tale about a group of friends from Coronado High in the 1960s who started the first major pot smuggling empire, with the help of their former Spanish teacher. What started as a bunch of hippies swimming small bales across the border with surfboards turned into a super sophisticated operation, bringing in Moroccan hash, Mexican grass, and Thai stick by the ton. They made more than $100m over a decade, and lived the life of Riley until it all came crashing down.:

14.000 Pflanzen: Marihuanaplantage in Spanien entdeckt
Spaniens Polizei hat nach eigenen Angaben die größte Marihuanaplantage in der Kriminalgeschichte des Landes entdeckt.
Wie das Madrider Innenministerium heute mitteilte, stellten die Drogenfahnder auf einer Farm in Puerto Lumbreras bei Murcia im Südosten des Landes mehr als 14.000 Cannabispflanzen sicher. Ihr Schwarzmarktwert wurde auf 15 Millionen Euro geschätzt.

Cannabis wird Wahlkampfthema in Österreich
In Österreich wird am 29. September ein neuer Nationalrat gewählt. Deshalb geben österreichische Politiker derzeit besonders viele Interviews, auch wenn dazu eigentlich kein konkreter Anlass besteht. In einem davon ließ die grünen Spitzenkandidatin Eva Glawischnigg letzte Woche beiläufig die Bemerkung fallen, dass sie dafür sei, den bloßen Konsum von Cannabis nicht mehr mit dem Strafrecht zu ahnden.

Der Landmann freut sich aber schon auf den unbeschwerten Tag der Legalisierung, denn der soll nach den Vorstellungen vieler Abgeordneter aus der islamistischen Regierungspartei in Marokko nicht mehr fern sein.
"Ich wäre wesentlich erleichtert, wenn der Staat uns endlich in Ruhe unsere Kräuter anbauen ließe und die Verhaftungen stoppen würden", sagt der siebenfache Vater Tahiri. Erst im letzten Jahr war sein bettelarmes Dorf namens Beni Gmil von der marokkanischen Drogenpolizei aufgebracht worden. Tahiri wäre für ein Leben in der Legalität bereit, sein Cannabisharz für 7500 Dirham (etwa 750 Euro) pro Kilo an den Staat abzugeben. Bislang verkauft er an Zwischenhändler, die ihm etwa das Doppelte zahlen.

GJIROKASTRA, Albania — The last time police tried to enter the mountainside village of Lazarat near this historic southern city last summer, they prompted a ferocious firefight a local police commissioner describes as “very much like a real war.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of being ostracized, he said he was part of a special forces operation during which sniper units occupied high ground as SWAT teams moved in to arrest a handful of people working in fields surrounding the village.

Als Polizeibeamte die Ex-Callgirl-Vermittlerin Heidi Fleiss zu Hause aufsuchten, staunten sie über deren grünen Daumen: Gleich mehrere hundert Marihuana-Pflanzen hatte die Dame bei sich stehen. Sie seien für eine "Genossenschaft in Las Vegas" bestimmt, beteuerte die 47-Jährige.
Hunderte wohlgepflegte Marihuana-Pflanzen entdeckten Beamte der Polizei im US-Bundesstaat Nevada auf dem Anwesen von Heidi Fleiss, bekannt als die "Hollywood Madam". Die Gesetzeshüter fanden 158 Hanfpflanzen im Garten und 234 weitere im Haus der ehemaligen Callgirl-Vermittlerin in Pahrump an der Grenze zu Kalifornien.

US could slash prison terms for drug dealers under sweeping review
Prison terms for all federal drug dealing offences could be cut under a sweeping sentencing review expected to be announced on Thursday that may go much further than the tentative steps toward ending America's "war on drugs", begun this week by attorney general Eric Holder.
The US Sentencing Commission, the independent government agency responsible for setting guidelines for judges, will meet in Washington to consider amending the "drug quantity table" – the grid that determines prison lengths for dozens of different categories of offence.

Kiffen macht antriebslos? Nicht beim Essen. Salamipizza mit extra Belag, Schokolade gleich tafelweise - nach dem Joint kommt häufig das Schlemmen. Dass Marihuana gegen Appetitlosigkeit wirkt, wussten Ärzte schon im 19. Jahrhundert. Die Ursache blieb jedoch lange ein Rätsel.
Es gab mal einen Studenten, der wurde in seinem Unistädtchen nur "der Typ mit der Hackpizza" genannt. Auch wer ihm niemals begegnet war, hatte von ihm gehört. Das Gericht hatte den Studenten berüchtigt gemacht, weil er nicht etwa einen Boden aus Teig mit Hack belegte, sondern einen Boden, der aus Hackfleisch bestand, mit allem, was der WG-Kühlschrank hergab. Der Student hatte oft großen Hunger.

DEA Program "More Troubling" Than NSA
Reuters is reporting on a secret effort by the Drug Enforcement Agency to collect data from wiretaps, informants, and other sources. Considered most troubling is a systematic campaign to hide this program from the courts, denying defendants their right to know how evidence against them was obtained. This agenda targets U.S. citizens directly, as it is mainly focused on drug trafficking. From the article: 'Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.
