Kreuzzug gegen Drogenhandel

Afghanistan retakes heroin crown
Afghanistan retook its place as the world's leading producer of heroin last year, after US-led forces overthrew the Taliban which had banned cultivation of opium poppies.
The finding was made in a key drug report, distributed in Kabul on Sunday by the US State Department, which supports almost identical findings by the United Nations last week.

Ecstasy over the counter
ECSTASY and speed would be freely available over the counter under a radical NSW Greens policy.
And heroin would be given to registered addicts in regulated quantities for use in a string of safe injecting rooms across the state.
The party wants to remove criminal penalties for personal drug use and establish licensed drug outlets to import, manufacture and sell drugs.
Details of the controversial policy are not included in the party's campaign literature for the March 22 state election, where the Greens are expected to receive their largest ever share of the vote in NSW.

Mushroom business lands 4 in trouble
In a way, it seems so '60s.
After all, aren't magic mushrooms a hippie thing of the past, long since pushed aside by cocaine, crank and meth?
Apparently not.
Last week, four people from the tiny town of Amanda Park in Grays Harbor County were charged with conspiring to sell, not mushrooms, but mushroom spores.
The four defendants indicted by a federal grand jury are Robert W. McPherson, Steven Coggin, Judy Kreigh and McPherson's wife, Margaret McPherson.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Whalley said it's not illegal to sell mushroom spores alone, but selling them with the purpose of producing hallucinogenic mushrooms is illegal.

Bolivia may legalize coca
The president of Bolivia is considering a plan to resume cultivation of the raw ingredient in cocaine in a remote jungle basin -- a move the U.S. government fears would undermine what is viewed as its most successful anti-drug program in South America.
President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada is studying a proposal to allow cultivation of coca in the Chapare region of central Bolivia to help calm unrest among growers who have blockaded major highways and put their support behind his political rival.

Thailand War on Drugs Turns Murderous, 600 Killed This Month
Early this year, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced an ambitious campaign to eradicate drugs in Thailand by April. While initially greeted with raised eyebrows as an unachievable goal, a mounting death toll since the campaign got underway on February 1 shows that the Thai government is deadly serious in its effort to wipe out the drug trade. According to the Thai Interior Ministry, 596 alleged drug dealers had been killed in the first two weeks of the campaign.

Border bust nets 10 tons of marijuana
In what is believed to be the largest-ever marijuana bust along America's southwestern border, U.S. Customs Service officers have seized nearly 20,000 pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer, officials said Saturday.
"This is a huge seizure," said Michael Turner, special agent in charge of the U.S. Customs office of investigations in San Diego. "Any time we can prevent 10 tons of narcotics from entering the streets of America, it's a great day for the U.S. Customs Service."

Britney Snorts at Coke Rumors
Britney Spears might not be that innocent, but she swears she's no coke addict. And she is going to court to prove it. The pop tartlet is fuming over a Star magazine story that says she has used cocaine and is reportedly planning to sue the supermarket tabloid.
"The only one who's guilty of doing cocaine has to be the source of this story," Spears' rep Nathalie K. Moar said in a statement released on Thursday. "It makes for good reading, but it's simply not true."
