Trap-happy pot growers targeted

The Canadian government says it is stiffening penalties for marijuana growers who set traps designed to injure or kill law enforcement officials and emergency workers.

Justice Minister Martin Cauchon also said on Friday Ottawa was still looking at ways of decriminalising marijuana -- an idea that causes deep concern in the United States -- and hoped to make its intentions clear by the end of June.

Jamaica to Decriminalize Marijuana ROFL

Two years ago Jamaica’s National Ganja Commission recommended the decriminalization of marijuana for private use. The recommendation came after months of hearings and fell short of full-scale regulation aimed at undermining the illicit market in illegal drugs. In addition to recommending decriminalization, the Commission also called for education programs to reduce demand and increased efforts to eradicate large-scale marijuana cultivation.

Nostalgic Small Town Puts Cannabis on Its Flag

All leaders wanted to do was celebrate the history of their small town by creating a flag everyone would be proud to see flying above the rooftops.

Instead, they have been mocked on national television for making a local plant their emblem. The local plant in question is cannabis.

Some 250 kilometers southwest of Moscow in the Bryansk region, a yellow, green and white flag now flies above the town hall. In the top left-hand corner is the plant more widely known for its hallucinogenic qualities and for being depicted on T-shirts and student posters.

Chant of the Weed BBC - Radio 3 - Jazz

Think of the received image of the jazz musician, the young man with a horn or the tortured singer with the gardenia in her hair. And think what baggage they carry, along with the reeds and the valve oil and the spare mouthpieces. Somewhere in the flight case or purse, tucked away out of sight but still seemingly essential to the image, a little something for after the gig, maybe weed, maybe white powder, maybe a discrete bottle of pills. Like it or not, drugs are very much part of the history and still more of the mythology or jazz.

Belgium to legalise cannabis

The Belgian parliament has voted to legalise the personal use of cannabis, within certain guidelines, for anyone over the age of 18.

The move, which has been the subject of fierce debate in Belgium for the last two years, will allow users to smoke small quantities of the drug in private, provided they do not disturb public order.

Its sale will, however, remain illegal and Belgium will not tolerate Dutch-style coffee shops selling cannabis over the counter. Hard drugs will continue to be outlawed.

Drug dealers go on strike at Copenhagen's famed Christiania

Hash dealers at Copenhagen's famed "free city" Christiania have announced a three-day strike starting Wednesday to protest against the Danish government's plan to clean up the area, it was reported. According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, dealers said they would block off the well-known Pusher Street in response to Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's vow to crack down on Christiania, the area in central Copenhagen founded by hippies in 1971 as part of the Danish counter-culture movement.
