New Cocaine-based Drink Hits the Market
In Peru, a new drink called Kdrink has hit the market. It looks and tastes like bottle iced tea. The beverage hit Peruvian stores this year and uses a formula made from coca leaves, the base ingredient in cocaine.
Each bottle contains a trace of cocaine -- 0.6 milligrams. This trace carries less kick than a cup of coffee. With the exception of Coca-Cola, products using coca leaves are banned in most nations by U.S. and UN import regulations.

This Is Your Government On Drugs
It sounds a bit like the answer to one of those old late-night, "so whatever happened to …" questions. Tommy Chong, 65-year-old grandfather, the lesser known half of the goofy late-70s burnout comedy duo Cheech and Chong, was convicted of the illegal sale of drug paraphernalia over the Internet (i.e. he marketed a line of glass bongs). In a bit of priceless comedic irony, the investigation was code-named Operation Pipe Dreams. Chong was sentenced to 9 months in prison on the second anniversary of September 11th.

Within hours of a decision by U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel allowing the Santa Cruz, Ca.-based Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana to resume growing marijuana and distributing it to its patients, Attorney General John Ashcroft took time away from fighting the war on terrorism to petition the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the federal appellate ruling underlying the judge's decision.

Riesige Cannabis-Plantage in Kärnten ausgehoben
In Kärnten ist eine der größten Cannabis-Indoor-Plantagen Österreichs entdeckt worden. Drei Männer sitzen in Haft, sie kultivierten zwei Jahre lang Tausende Hanfpflanzen in eigens angemieteten Hallen. 1.900 Gramm THC-Reinsubstanz wurden sichergestellt.

96-jährige Rollstuhlfahrerin wegen Drogenbesitzes festgenommen
Polizisten fanden in ihrem Rollstuhl Crack, wie eine Lokalzeitung am Samstag berichtete. Die Beschuldigte Julia Roberts erklärte, sie habe keine Ahnung, wie die Drogen dorthin gerieten. «Ich habe noch nie welche gesehen», sagte sie, nachdem sie bis zu einer Gerichtsanhörung freigelassen wurde.
Die Polizei zweifelt an dieser Darstellung: In dem Wohnwagen, in dem Roberts mit ihrem Sohn lebt, wurde nun schon zum dritten Mal Crack gefunden. Nach Angaben der Polizei handeln die alte Dame, ihre beiden Söhne sowie ein Nachbar mit dem Stoff, den sie gegen gestohlene Waffen und Schmuck eintauschten. Ein Informant habe der Polizei gesagt, dass Roberts die Drogen bei einer früheren Hausdurchsuchung in ihrer Beinprothese versteckt habe.

Die Kokainproblematik nimmt in Wien deutlich zu. Zu diesem Schluss kommt die Medizinische Universität, die neben neun anderen Städten an einer EU-Studie teilgenommen hat. Als Konsequenz wird ab dem 19. April eine wöchentliche, telefonische Sprechstunde an der Uni-Klinik für Psychiatrie eingerichtet, die Betroffenen beratend zur Seite stehen soll. Mit den Ergebnissen bewege sich die Bundeshauptstadt durchaus im europäischen Trend, stellte Gabriele Fischer als Leiterin der Studie bei deren Präsentation am Dienstag klar.
