Profile of famed LSD chemist Owsley

The San Francisco Chronicle managed to get an interview with the elusive Augustus Owsley Stanley III, a DIY chemist who produced legendary tabs of high quality LSD in the 1960s.

Owlsey's acid was even purer than the LSD made by Sandoz in Switzerland, the company that invented LSD and supplied it to the US Government as a tool of psychological warfare. Owsley's LSD was so pure that you could shake a beaker of it and it would glow -- its crystals were piezoluminescent.

'Unusually frisky' deer blow lid on marijuana plantation

Italian police busted two would-be marijuana cultivators after "unusually frisky" deer alerted the authorities as to the presence of their mountaintop dope plantation, UPI reports.

Locals in Trento began telling tales of the abnormally high-spirited animals, while forest rangers began to wonder why the normally shy and straight-laced cervine population was letting it all hang out by day and "making great leaps on the mountainside".

Summer of Love: 40 years later, Vermonters reflect on 1967

Fleeting images are sometimes stronger than fact-filled memories when Vermonters reminisce about the 1967 Summer of Love, a defining period in an era of remarkable change. For Jane Pincus of Roxbury, the most indelible recollection is of a young man standing on his head in a yoga position as the morning mist cloaked San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. That silent moment was in vivid contrast with kinetic Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture mecca where she lived for about three weeks in June with her filmmaker husband Ed and their toddler daughter Sami.

Drugs smuggled in a football

Guards at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre foiled a bizarre attempt to smuggle drugs in a football.

On Saturday night, a prisoner doing cleanup triggered an alarm when he got too close to a fence line at the jail, sending guards scurrying to the scene, where they grabbed the inmate and discovered a football filled with tobacco, said Solicitor General spokesman Christine Skjerven.

"This is the only time we know of that this has happened," she said. The inmate faces internal charges and a disciplinary hearing.
