Dr. Timothy Leary’s Footprint

There are few individuals who have had the impact on all of humanity that Dr. Timothy Leary exerted. Certainly there are a number of people who have altered our understanding of the material world, who have sparked civil movements, or technological innovations that have rerouted or offset tragedy and the cycles of history. But Leary pulled people into contemplation of their own experience, and redefined what Western Culture thought of as ‘religion’ entirely. He showed that perspective altered experience, and this was a message too volatile for the institutions and the administrations of the sixties and seventies to digest.

LSD, hypnosis and the Catholic Church

I found this interesting snippet, among many interesting snippets, on p194 of David Healy's book The Creation of Psychopharmacology (ISBN 0674015991), a history of the science and medicine of psychiatric drug development.

It discusses the similarities between the reaction of the authorities to LSD in the 1960s and the reaction to hypnotism in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Drug treatment isn't a silver bullet

OK, so you're rich and famous and have a drug problem. You relapse and get arrested. What do you do?

It seems the latest trend in countering your likely conviction is not hiring a "dream team" of legal defenders but immediately enrolling in a rehab drug program.

Lindsay Lohan, the troubled Hollywood starlet, joins a host of other high-profile celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and the son of the former vice president, Al Gore III, who have adopted this novel strategy.

Cannabis joints damage lungs more than tobacco - study

A single cannabis joint may cause as much damage to the lungs as five chain-smoked cigarettes, research has found. Medical examinations of cannabis and cigarette smokers found the drug increased specific lung problems, including obstructed airways and hyperinflation, a condition where too much air remains in the lungs when a person exhales.

Cannabis use linked to 40% rise in risk of schizophrenia

Smoking cannabis increases the risk of schizophrenia by at least 40% according to research which indicates that there are at least 800 people suffering serious psychosis in the UK after smoking the drug.

Mental health groups called on the government last night to issue fresh health warnings and launch an education campaign to advise teenagers that even light consumption of the drug could trigger long-term mental health problems. The findings came after a rush of ministers declared their cannabis-smoking pasts and an order from the prime minister for officials to consider whether the drug should be reclassified amid fears about its more potent "skunk" form. Last night the Home Office said the research would be considered in that review.
