DVD-Hacker plädiert auf unschuldig
Jon Lech Johansen, der jugendliche DVD-Hacker aus Norwegen, steht vor Gericht. Ein Berufungsgericht in Oslo muss klären, ob sein Freispruch aus dem vergangenen Januar rechtmäßig war. Zum Auftakt des Prozesses erklärte sich der 20-jährige mit dem Spitznamen «DVD-Jon» für unschuldig. Sein «DeCSS»-Programm zum Knacken des Kopierschutzes von DVDs habe nicht dem Zweck gedient, illegale Kopien anzufertigen.

If Jon Johansen - who goes on trial again later today in Norway - had the intention of raising public awareness of Locked Music when he posted his DRM crack for iTunes, he's certainly achieved it now, we reckon.

Die Filmbranche macht mobil: Raubkopien und Film-Downloads gehen ihr an die finanzielle Substanz. "Hart aber gerecht" will ein Bündnis von Filmverbänden sein - zunächst mit einer Werbekampagne, die ganz und gar nicht "lax und pädagogisch" daherkommen soll.

Norwegian organizations offer free music downloads
Phonofile manages the Norwegian music download service and the company now has between 48,000-49,000 files available. They expect to have about 98 percent of this material on offer for free download during the anniversary week.

HERO Archive.org to Vivendi: we'll host MP3.com's files
MP3.com founder Robertson is in talks with Vivendi Universal to save the music collection at the site. CNET bought the domain name last week after a night on the tiles, and Vivendi said the archive will close in December.
But Archive.org founder Brewster Kahle says he's only too happy to host the collection.

Jeden Tag eine gute Tat ist das Motto des Fähnlein Fieselschweifs. Und mehr als eine gute Tat pro Tag vollbringen die Betreiber der Sendthemback.org, deren Anliegen zudem wunderbar in die bald über uns hereinbrechende Vorweihnachtszeit passt. Gegründet wurde von ihnen nämlich der Verein "Parents and Their Kids against Stealing", der dann im Internet sofort die vorbildliche Aktion "Send them back" ins Leben rief.

We knew stealing that music was wrong. Stealing is never OK. But, it was just too easy. So we told ourselves we were just "sharing" the music, because everyone knows that sharing is a good thing.
But then we learned what we were really doing. We heard our favorite recording artists telling us that our "sharing" is really shoplifting and piracy. We were stealing from the musicians and singers we love!

McDonald’s said to be in iTunes deal
Fast-food giant McDonald’s is planning to give away 1 billion song downloads from Apple’s online music store, according to a report. The New York Post said Thursday that it is not clear how McDonald’s would distribute the music, but said an announcement is expected soon. If true, the McDonald’s deal would eclipse a pact that Apple Computer announced with PepsiCo to give away 100 million songs early next year.

Das "Massachusetts Institute of Technology" in Cambridge, kurz M.I.T, hatte im Rahmen des bereits vorhandenen Analog-TV-Netzes der Uni vor knapp anderthalb Wochen einen internen "Music On Demand"-Service eröffnet, der von den Studenten Keith Winstein und Josh Mandel entwickelt worden war. Doch bereits nach wenigen Betriebsstunden wiesen diverse Plattenfirmen, vor allem die Universal Music Group, darauf hin, dass für die Veröffentlichung der Musikstücke durch den M.I.T.-Service weder eine Genehmigung erteilt, noch eine finanzielle Vereinbarung getroffen wurde.
