Klagekampagne der Musikindustrie vorerst gestoppt
Am Freitag hat sich ein Bundesgericht in Washington D.C. auf die Seite des Internetanbieters Verizon gestellt und der US-Musikindustrie damit eine empfindliche Niederlage erteilt. Zwar kündigt die Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) bereits an, auch in Zukunft weiter Nutzer zu verklagen. Doch dazu muss sie sich auf eine andere Taktik einlassen - und empfindlich höhere Kosten einkalkulieren.

Internet-Piraterie: Niederlage für US-Musikindustrie
Die US-Musikindustrie hat vor einem US-Gericht eine Niederlage in ihrem Kampf gegen Internet-Piraten erlitten. Die Musikbranche darf Internetanbieter in den USA nicht zwingen, Namen von Nutzern weiterzugeben, die illegal online Musik tauschen. Das entschied ein Berufungsgericht gestern in Washington.

As courts continue to review the fine ethical line between sharing and stealing over file-swapping networks, some universities are adding anti-plagiarism software to their budgets and putting limits on the amount of data students can download.
But one new media program is trying to send students a very different message. At the University of Maine, Orono, "cheaters can prosper," according to professor Jon Ippolito.

Update: Arbeitsloser Radio- und Fernsehtechniker soll knapp 5.000 Euro zahlen. Man kennt es ja - Abmahnungen mit 250.000 Euro Streitwert. Neu allerdings: Diesmal ist kein Promi-Name in einer Domain schuld, sondern ein kleines Progrämmchen namens "ClonyXXL".

Canada deems P2P downloading legal
Downloading copyrighted music from peer-to-peer networks is legal in Canada, although uploading files is not, Canadian copyright regulators said in a ruling released Friday.
In the same decision, the Copyright Board of Canada imposed a government fee of as much as $25 on iPod-like MP3 players, putting the devices in the same category as audio tapes and blank CDs. The money collected from levies on "recording mediums" goes into a fund to pay musicians and songwriters for revenues lost from consumers' personal copying. Manufacturers are responsible for paying the fees and often pass the cost on to consumers.

Daughter's downloads get mom sued
Michele Scimeca said she has tried to lay down the law when it comes to the online activities of her two teenage daughters.
So the Rockaway Township mom sounded surprised yesterday to learn that she is among at least eight New Jersey residents being sued by the music industry for illegal song-swapping.

Sharman Networks zwingt Kazaa Lite in die Knie
Seit dem Wochenende ist auf der Homepage des werbefrei gepatchten P2P-Clients Kazaa Lite (K++) keine Spur mehr von der Applikation zu finden. Nach Angaben des P2P-Newsportals PeerGuardian hat Sharman Networks, Anbieter des offiziellen FastTrack-Clients Kazaa, die Kazaa-Lite-Entwickler dazu gezwungen.

This weekend users of Kazaa Lite K++ learned that almost every download site of the popular peer-to-peer file-sharing application had disappeared, including the links on its own home page.

Der Verein zur Förderung freier Software (FFS) hat eine Informationskampagne zur Rückvergütung von Pauschalabgaben auf CDs und DVDs in Österreich gestartet. Die Leerkassettenvergütung wird auch auf CD- und DVD-Rohlinge aufgeschlagen, wenn diese tatsächlich für Urlaubsfotos, Geschäftsdaten, freie Software wie GNU/Linux oder vom Käufer selbst erstellte Inhalte verwendet werden.
Bei Kopien, für die der Urheber seine ausdrückliche Einwilligung erteilt hat, sieht das Gesetz aber die Möglichkeit einer Rückerstattung der Urheberrechtsabgabe vor.

Judge Allows 'Screener' Copies to Voters
A federal judge Friday freed movie distributors to send copies of films to awards voters — a decision seen as a victory for independent film producers as awards season approaches. U.S. District Judge Michael B. Mukasey lifted a rule imposed by the Motion Picture Association of America that blocked studios from sending the videotape copies, or "screeners," to voters.

Music Industry Targets Even Computer-Less
The recording industry has filed 41 more lawsuits against computer users in at least 11 states it said were caught illegally distributing songs over the Internet, continuing its aggressive campaign against online music piracy.
Among the RIAA's recent targets is retiree Ernest Brenot, 79, of Ridgefield, Wash., who wrote in a handwritten note to a federal judge that he does not own a computer nor can he operate one.
Brenot was accused of illegally offering for download 774 songs by artists including Vanilla Ice, U2, Creed, Linkin Park and Guns N' Roses.
