DRM 'will be cracked' says iTunes hacker

According to the Australian researcher who cracked the authentication used by Apple's iTunes software, current-generation Digital Rights Management (DRM) will never work.

David Hammerton, a 20-year-old Arts-Science student, reverse-engineered iTunes' authentication measures last week, allowing non-iTunes clients to connect to Apple's servers. It was the second time he had managed to crack the authentication, however this time it took him just eight hours to break the brand-new iTunes 4.5, which had been patched against his previous research.

Next Gen Mp3 To Be Unpirateable?

You can rip, copy, or play an MP3 file, but one thing you can't do is get more than two channels of sound out of it. Soon, you will be able to, although you may have more trouble copying the file. The Fraunhofer Institute, originator of the file format that brought the music industry to its knees, is adding surround sound and copyright protection.

Russian MP3 site sells DRM-free music by the megabyte

That's the apparently insane price proposition that a Russian site called allofmp3.comoffers its customers. You buy your music by the megabyte, at the rate of 500 MB for $US5 and you dial in the sort of encoding you want: MP3, MPEG4-AAC, OGG, MPC, WMA etc at various bit rates using different encoders _ say the LAME alt-presets. If we were prepared to pay more for the bandwidth, we could elect to have the music encoded with lossless algorithms, giving us the same quality as the original CD.

Ripping from the radio

p2pnet.net News:- The entertainment industry is re-doubling its efforts to force digital radio listeners to listen to what the labels want, and pay for the privilege, too.

And with that in mind, there's an interesting new radio app that'll get you a list of available Shoutcast stations you can record, "creating a single MP3 file for each song the station plays".

It'll also allow you to record up to 300 streams at one time while its 'Memory Recording' tracks the songs you download, copying the final song file to your music library. If that song gets re-recorded in the future, it'll skip it so if you end up deleting it, it won't record, "bloating your collection with music you don't want".

What will Playfair do for you?

The playfair program is quite simple. It takes one of the iTMS Protected AAC Audio Files, decodes it using a key obtained from your iPod or Microsoft Windows system and then writes the new, decoded version to disk as a regular AAC Audio File. It then optionally copies the metadata tags that describe the song, including the cover art, to the new file.
