Die IP-Adresse ist eine Art Nummernschild des Computers, über das die Anbieter von Internetzugängen ihre Kunden identifizieren können.

RapidShare hands over user info in Germany, users panic
File hosting service RapidShare has reportedly handed over user IP data to the record industry, leading to at least one user's home being raided in Germany. This has led to speculation that content owners may start abusing Germany's copyright law to start going after other P2P users as well.

Provider-Sorgen wegen Anti-Piraterie-Pakts
Die Vereinigung der Österreichischen Internet-Anbieter (ISPA) und die Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKÖ) befürchten, dass mit dem umstrittenen Anti-Piraterie-Abkommen (ACTA) auch in Österreich Netzsperren nach Urheberrechtsverstößen Einzug halten könnten. Anlass dazu liefert auch ein vor kurzem ergangener Beschluss des Europäischen Gerichtshofs zur Rolle und Verantwortung der Internet-Provider bei Urheberrechtsverletzungen.

Ein schwedisches Gericht hat vier Verantwortliche von The Pirate Bay der Beihilfe zur schweren Urheberrechtsverletzung für schuldig befunden und zu einjährigen Haftstrafe sowie Schadensersatz in Millionenhöhe verurteilt. Der Schadensersatz in Höhe von 30 Millionen Schwedischen Kronen (2,75 Millionen Euro) soll verschiedenen Film- und Musikunternehmen zugutekommen.

Judge In Pirate Bay Case Appears To Have Ties To The Copyright Lobby
Via Martin Thornkvist, we find out that Swedish Public radio has discovered that the judge in The Pirate Bay case apparently has some ties to the copyright lobby (that's a Google translation -- if you know Swedish, the original is here). Apparently, he's a member of a few organizations that work towards strengthening copyright laws, and even holds a board position in one of those organizations. The lawyers representing the entertainment industry also belonged to one of the pro-copyright organizations in which the judge is a member.

Swedish Pirate Party Doubles in Size After Bay Verdict
Membership in the Swedish Pirate Party has more than doubled in the wake of last Friday's verdict against The Pirate Bay, dramatically increasing the copyright-reform party's chances of winning a seat in the European Parliament.
Over 22,000 new party members have joined the Pirate Party since a panel of judges sentenced a financier and three administrators of the torrent-tracking site to a year in prison. The explosion of support has swelled the party's membership from 15,000 on Friday morning to more than 37,000 on Wednesday, according to party officials.

Victory for EU Citizens! Amendment 138 was voted again.
Strasbourg, April 21 2009 - Once again, the European Parliament has demonstrated it can resist pressure and stand for the rights and freedoms of citizens. Amendment 138 (now renumbered amendment 46) was adopted today in ITRE committe, in Strasbourg.
Amendement 138/46-135 states that restrictions to the fundamental rights and freedoms of Internet users can only be put in place after a decision by judicial authorities (save when public security is threatened in which case the ruling may be subsequent). It was adopted last September by an overwhelming majority of the European Parliament, and approved by the European Commission despite explicit requests from the French Presidency to reject it. The European Council has rejected it further to pressure of the French government and some disinformation by in-house Council lawyers on its claimed contradiction with existing National law.

Study Finds Pirates Buy 10x More Music Online than Non-Pirates
A study from the BI Norwegian School of Management has found that those who download free music from services like BitTorrent are also the biggest legitimate consumers of downloadable music.
In fact, among all 1,901 Norway-based study participants (all of whom were over the age of 15), it was found that those who downloaded "free" music were 10x more likely to download pay music. In other words, music pirates are the music industry's largest online consumers.

ISPs refuse to shut down Pirate Bay
Following yesterday's conviction of the four men connected with the popular file sharing site, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is demanding that Pirate Bay website be shut down.
But Internet service providers (ISPs) refuse to cooperate, reports the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.
