ASUS: Eee Keyboard to launch in October, C64 fans unite!
ASUS Eee Keyboard will officially launch in North America and Europe in October. And while CEO Jerry Shen is keeping quiet on pricing, the original $400 to $500 estimates should hold-up. The Commodore 64-esque keyboard PC originally announced at CES in January features an integrated 5-inch display, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of memory, either 16GB or 32GB of SSD storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI and wireless UWB HDMI.

The $300 student challenge
Being a student these days means you’re neck-deep in some of the coolest technology you can’t afford. As a recent graduate, I remember all too well what it’s like to walk the line between pinching pennies and trying not to settle for the bottom of the bargain bin. So when Macworld told me I had $300 to set up my student Mac, it felt like old times.

40 years of Unix
The computer world is notorious for its obsession with what is new - largely thanks to the relentless engine of Moore's Law that endlessly presents programmers with more powerful machines.
Given such permanent change, anything that survives for more than one generation of processors deserves a nod.

3-D Printers Make Manufacturing Accessible
3-D printers can take blobs of plastic and shape them into almost any object you desire. Now, thanks to open source hardware designs and enthusiastic do-it-yourselfers, these printers are increasingly popular and accessible. People are using them to fabricate iPod docks, plastic bracelets, hair clips and miniature teapots at home.
The latest is Makerbot, a 3-D printer that started shipping in April and has sold more than 200 machines.

Researchers find insecure BIOS 'rootkit' pre-loaded in laptops
A popular laptop theft-recovery service that ships on notebooks made by HP, Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Gateway, Asus and Panasonic is actually a dangerous BIOS rootkit that can be hijacked and controlled by malicious hackers.
The service — called Computrace LoJack for Laptops — contains design vulnerabilities and a lack of strong authentication that can lead to “a complete and persistent compromise of an affected system,” according to Black Hat conference presentation by researchers Alfredo Ortega and Anibal Sacco from Core Security Technologies.

Asus Eee Keyboard dissected
The Asus Eee Keyboard is basically a computer crammed inside a keyboard case. The idea is that users will be able to connect the keyboard to a HDTV using wireless HDMI in order to access web content on a big screen TV from the comfort of your couch. On the inside, the keyboard basically has your typical netbook components, including a 1.66Ghz Intel Atom N280 CPU, a solid state disk, and a battery. The keyboard also has a 5 inch, 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen that lets you use the keyboard without a TV/display or which can act as touch-interface for your larger display.

Analog Ruler With Digital Display
At first, it doesn’t seem like adding a digital display to something as quintessentially analog as a ruler is a good idea at all. But, designer Shay Shafranek has managed to add a whole bunch of relevant features not generally available on the old fashioned, wooden variety. The ruler has a conductive sensor along the edge that reads the location of a pencil tip, which means (for example) that you don’t have to measure from the end of the ruler…
